this is what a stuffed stator looks like.....

Had a 70-mile ride about ten days ago and on the last leg of the journey i got a few backfires quarter of a mile from home and when I hit the horn button (always the acid test)...I got nothing...

Ooops.....charging system problem for sure....

Last week had a busy week away from home as usual, but I did manage to check and recheck on one morning at home and found the battery and regulator seemingly OK but the charging output was very poor...and the stator *****while giving the correct AC voltage*** failed ALL known resistance tests.

I finally tore it apart today and this is what I found....

See where my thumb is in this fuzzy phone pic ......on each wire to each stator pin in the plug, the insulation had worn away and the wires were grounding on the case.... earthing the output. Which explains why the moment I fired up the motor and tested the DC voltage at the battery I was not getting anywhere near the right reading.....

As the windings were looking really kinda stuffed anyway.....

I will be springing for a new one. This OEM stator has lasted ten years and tens of thousands of miles. Can't grumble.

Re: this is what a stuffed stator looks like.....

I did a swap out on a stator on an ultra a while ago, i knew something was up when i cracked open the primary. There was a really terrible smell from it. The windings had developed a short and it had fried itself.
Folks kept coming up and asking if there was a gas leak somewhere, it was that bad.
Replaced the stator in my own bike last year as the plug had deteriorated and started smoking.
I see that HD say to use new screws but i just cleaned the old ones and put fresh loctite on them, ok so far.

Gas mark 10 by the looks of things.

I cooked a stator many years ago, the stink was awful when i open the primary
