Belt Clearance

What would be considered the Minimum clearance from belt to tyre?
Just fitted 3.5" rims which has stretched the profile of the tyre somewhat & now the clearance is errm tight but not quite touching, have given it a blat with no apparent probs but with this cold weather the tyre aint gonna expand much. Don't really want the expense & hassle of a 1/4" offset kit.
The tyre fitted at the mo is a conti milestone, is there a tyre out there apart from the dunflop that has a slimmer sidewall profile? or should I just suck it & see.

By the way I only ride solo & weigh 9 1/2 stone geared up

Re: Belt Clearance

I would just keep an eye on it personally, you will see the marks on the tyre if it does start rubbing, on my softail the belt is about 1mm from the tyre and havent had an issue as yet.

Re: Belt Clearance

Beware of tyre expansion when hot. I got a 140 Venom professionally fitted to my FXR (stock size was 130) and all was well when I left the fitters. However, by the time I reached home, the tyre was chafing the belt guard due to expansion and the rubber had started to melt. The actual belt is well clear of the tyre.

Lucky for me, the FXR belt guard is a 2-piece jobby, with the section nearest the tyre consisting of a PVC curtain held on by 3 pop rivets. Once these rivets were removed, the PVC section came off and I gained around 3mm, which was enough to clear the new rubber.

The Metzler ME880 seems to come up on the slim side; I'm sure Phil mentioned this on a thread somewhere, perhaps he can confirm it.

Re: Belt Clearance

Thanks for all the input guys. Phillspace I was actually looking at the metz as it is actually certified for use on the new rims as is the avon but not the conti for some odd reason, I know from their site that the tyre will fit the 3 1/2" rim which is the max rim width for a 130. I will leave it be for now & just keep an eye on it. Thanks again.

Re: Belt Clearance

For the last 6-8,000 miles I've been using an Avon 160 Venom X with a 3.5" fatboy wheel on a softail with a 1-1/2" belt. The 160 measures 6.6" It rubs backward, but not forward. The belt clears the tire by 1/16". The tire is in the center of the backbone. Wife and I tour quite a bit along with the "kitchen sink", so I check it closely. So far so good. I suspect Avon wouldn't approve. FWIW it's easier said than done. It required grinding fender bolts, cutting the belt guard, machining the hub, new spacers and shims. My backup position was to have been a narrower belt, but keep the pulley and sprocket .

Re: Belt Clearance

I have Avon Venoms on my bike and the belt kisses it! The tyre has a polished edge as a result. Hasn't caused any problems over the last 20+k miles.
