Primary oil.

What oil can be used in a 1987 1340 evo powered softail classic?
Everywhere I look it says to use Harley part no xxxxx or similar.
What is similar?

Is it that special that some other oil cannot be used?

Any info. Thanks TC

Re: Primary oil.

Hi, Neat bikeTheres a few different brands of oil that claim to be equal to or better than the original HD brand.I'm sure others on here have used them, some are happy to use them.I've owned 3 HD'S and i've always used the HD brand oil with no problems.I only use the HD oil because it is manufactured for this type of motor,But in the end the choice is yours.Remember though if you change oil brands, some have different compounds in them to keep the nasties in suspension so they don't clog up oilways, and may react differently with each other.I ain't no oil guru but if you know what type of oil is in it stick to it.

yep. ATF...type F or G....buy it at every car parts shop. Cheap. Been running it in my '85 for YEARS.....

In the primary, of course, there are no oilways to clog up. This is just to splash plates and chain.
