| Dyna cast wheels
Just got myself a 98 FXDS to join my 07 Night Rod Special and i'm loving it. I use the bike to ride to work every day and I have a feeing that the chrome spoke wheels aren't going to stand up to winter riding. Are the cast wheels well finished and would they stand up to road salt? If so does anyone know of any breakers that may have a pair? Thanks Steve |

| Re: Dyna cast wheels Any stock wheel, whether steel spoked or cast aluminium, will always suffer from corrosion due to salt, it's just that the corrosion will be different on each type. Cast wheels can be polished then given a powdercoat (either coloured or clear) which is a pretty durable finish. But spoked wheels can be rebuilt with stainless steel spokes and rims, which is a really good solution if you are prepared to pay for it. Consider using Hagon for the rebuild or Devon Rims. Of course, you could save your money and treat your wheels with a decent surface protectant, leaving it on until spring. I use Wintawax for this purpose. It doesnt look pretty, but it saves your surface finish. |

| Re: Dyna cast wheels
I have had my 1990 bike from new and the original finish on the cast wheels did not last long, with winter riding. I eventually had them stripped and refinished (by my local Yamaha dealer!) and they look far better, although the same colour all over. I don't ride winters so much now (they are not as hard as when I bought the bike either). I use my Buell more for daily use and after three years or so the wheels on that are looking dowdy, so they have stood up better than the Glide's. Cast wheels are easier to refinish than wire spoked ones, if you want to ride year round. Perhaps a pair of each?! |
