Dam speedo sender...

Happy christmas all!! hope your all enjoying the break.

Right down to the knitty gritty, I have a 98 Night train, my second harley. I am on my second speedo sender on the night train and had one go on my old sporty.

Now starting to get fed up with senders and was wondering if the is an alternative to using the sender that has the magnet.

I am known to be a be bit of a muppet when it comes to all things techinal but wonder if theres a better way...

Many thanks

Phil

Re: Dam speedo sender...

there, uh, *WAS*.....

it was a mechanical drive unit that fitted on the front axle. cable linked to speedo. Must have been used for 20-30 years on Big Twins.

This was before someone decided H-Ds had to have digital speedos circa 1996.

I like the old set-up .....i think you are stuffed with the digital style ones though.

This item looks like a 50p Chinese special and costs about £50. A VERY COMMON FAILURE. Come on the technical folks surely somebody knows of a cheaper soloution.

Re: Dam speedo sender...

cheers all,

yeah a bit pants really, going to be on my third one. Interesting thing is my Dad says they should last for ages as there used some planes for detecting over speed on the engines and they last for ages...

all i say is harley tech guys sort it out, i dont want to be buying my forth one. My old man reckons the speedo has failed but i doubt it as this is such a common thing to fail.

anyway all have a great 2008! and safe riding hope we get some better riding days this year..

-Phil

Re: Dam speedo sender...

It's partly down to hostile enviroment,I'm sure they're better protected on a plane.
Same on car applications,CPS on the end of engine=trouble.
Same type of sensor on end of cam under nice plastic cover lasts forever.

You have a PM.

I'm interested in this Dave....some time ago our Harley-Queen had some speedo problems on her 97 springer that we have still to resolve, are you possibly suggesting there might be an alternative source / type of sensor?
