I had pretty much the same symptoms years ago, and it was the speedo sender unit that was the problem, not saying for sure that your problem, but its something to think about:

Thanks for the reply scotty, i tried that last weekend but no change,
ive looked around the intraweb and the best bet is the rectifiers buggered.
failing that im calling it a day and going down to a shop. (its starting to cost me sleepless nights trying to figure it out)

Cant see it being the Rectifier, but hey I'm willing to be proved wrong
Do you know anyone near you that you could a speedo off to try on yer bike to rule that out of the equation.

Had trouble with the them in the past but never affected the speedo.

Just had a call from chester HD, initial clock price was £153.00 so was awaiting for it to arrive after confirming it was the clock. however they no longer stock that code and the new replacement will be over £300....from the states. (i feel like ive been mugged).

Re: 96 Flstn Speedo Help!

No I don't have one,all mine tick and twitch.

I like to have parts book for anything I have however many wheels.
Failing that I would have got part no's from dealer and checked here for price and availability.

Harley-Davidson Guernsey - Harley Parts

Next stop,at the risk of sounding like a broken record, would have been an Indy who is a member on here and builds customs to see if he had a take off or one on the shelf that didn't get used.

I've found stuff before now by just putting part no in google.

Yes I know this wont help now but there may be a next time.
