| 90 FLHS Speedo and Turn Signal Issues
I wasn't sure if these were or could be related, but here is what happened. I went out for a stretch today, gassed up and reset my trip odomoter. 10 miles later, as I was going along... noticed that my speedo had stopped working, and then noticed that my turn signals (which normally turn off by themselves) were not doing that anymore. They work, but they stay on (have to kill the switch myself). Tach is working fine, just no speedo, so I've got NO idea how far I went today. And the flashers aren't a problem, I can hit the switch myself I suppose... but it's not working as it has been. At first I was thinking a fuse... but not sure if that would affect the speedo... checked the cable and all seems intact. Thank you! |

funny that just removed a screamin eagle flame speedo off of my 1994 fat boy,now i have never had self canceling turn signals,on this bike, fitted the same speedo that would have come with the bike new,the now takes 2 bulbs,as flame clock only took one but there was a bulb holder taped up between the tanks,so all is well now, went out for a spin to check speed calobration, and fuck me ive got self canceling turn signals,it can only be down to a earth problem.

The two are very much related. If the speedo is not working, the turn signals will not cancel. For the non working speedo check that the cable hasn`t snapped, usually at the bottom by the wheel. Fitting the stock speedo probably restored the self cancel function.

Darknight, I had a 1990 FLHS with same problem; traced it to the speedo cable outer working loose at speedo end. As you'll know by now it's not helped by the rat's nest of wires in the nacelle, makes it difficult to access.

I appreciate the input. I'll check those both out, at the wheel, and at the speedo itself, and you're right.. it's not easy to get to. Thanks again! |

| Re: 90 FLHS Speedo and Turn Signal Issues
I have had my 1990 FLHS since new and got hacked off with the indicators cancelling themselves at vulnerable moments. For those who would like to make them non-self-cancelling there is a white/green wire hanging around in the instrument binnacle, with a black connector in it. Simply pull the connector apart (it is a bit of a fiddle) to provide totally manual operation. Obligingly both sides of the connector are insulated so the two wires can be left hanging around without risk of a short. Simply press on - press off! Press both buttons together to get hazard flashers. |
