Question FLH passenger footboard question.

My 1990 FLHS has passenger footboard chrome covers fitted by a previous owner. I unscrewed 'em to look underneath (why?!?) but now I can't screw 'em back on... the bolts seem to have a small notch cut out, and the thread of the bolt doesn't seem to be biting on anything much... I know it's trivial but any info. would be great - thanks, David ~

Re: FLH passenger footboard question.

Hi David, the screws are "self tapping" that's why the notch is there. Just give a bit of pressure to the screwdriver and they should go back in. If they are just turning when screwed in the thread that was cut into the ally is probably stripped. If that is the case, use a slightly larger screw size.
I run a 90 FLHS the same as yourself. Had it over 10 years now

Re: FLH passenger footboard question.

Nice to see other '90 FLHS folks around! (what an awesome bike) Was starting to feel like I was the only one left sometimes!!

Good call on the self tapping screws for the cover. Should do the job fine. If not, just go up a size, but don't go crazy. Don't need to jump up that far.

Thanks guys for the info! Good to hear from some FLHS riders too ;-) Any ideas on where to get the correct oversize screws?

If you can measure the ones that came out you can look at this table to see next size up.
If you've got a drill bit for hole size and it won't go in hole you know the next size will bite.

Hi David,

Welcome from another 1990 FLHS owner (from new, no chrome covers!). They don't make'em like they used to....

Graham.

Very true... I love my scruffy ol' Glide ;-)

Off comes the 'Live to Ride' air cleaner cover, off comes the daft HD teardrop mirrors, off comes the chrome foot board covers, off comes the camp headlamp & passing lamp peaks, off comes the front axle bolt covers...

Infact I have a chrome h/lamp nacelle fitted, I'll swop it with a standard one (not chrome) if anyone's interested...

What's the fate of those other chrome goodies? Footboard covers and air cleaner cover in particular!?!

Well, if we can trade 'em then that'd be great... I'm in Nottingham btw.
