Intermittent indicator fault??

Hopefully someone help

Have a 97 Fatty with an intermittent fault on the left front indicator. this has been ongoing for the last two years, want to get it fixed for the MOT.

when i first turn the ignition on and the bike is cold the indicator works fine. however once the engine has been on a while (2 mins or so) it will not work.

it is not a fault with the light unit as have completely removed signal and tried another one.

If i then leave bike for an hour or so it will then work!!

I have taken the controls apart completely, no obvious problems, the bars are internally wired no fraying at all, grommets still in place.

Very confused any suggestions MOT on wednesday and i really need to get it fixed

Thanks for help

Andy

Re: Intermittent indicator fault??

I have just had the same fault,,

After checking indicator lights and all wireing took it to a local guy..

It turned out,, the flasher unit is a one piece unit,, but internally it is separate,, ie half does the left flashers and half does the right..

It turned out that the right amount of electric was going in the right side but it was only pushing out about 5.2 volts on the other, so not the full amount to work the indicator lights correctly.. on the right hand side..

New unit fitted and all was well.

Hope this throws some light on it..

Re: Intermittent indicator fault??

Had a very similar problem on a 2000 TC, and it turned out to be the sender unit in the top of the gearbox, because tis controls the self canceling side of the indicators as well as the speedo.
Worth a look.

Re: Intermittent indicator fault??

This is probably too late for your MOT purposes, Strawhead, but similar thing happened to my Evo FXRS a couple of years ago. Replaced flasher module (v. easy job, even I could do it) with part which I now realise was secondhand. Hmm. Still, it worked.

Same thing recently (and just before MOT). Went crazy checking everything in sight, and lo and behold, flasher module needed replacing. New unit £140 from local indie. Does the job...

Hope you got sorted.

Re: Intermittent indicator fault??

Oddly enough i fiddled aound with the wiring between the tank and it started working, took it down to MOT centre, MOT'd it working fine, left centre tried indicator and lo and behold it doesn't work any more.

so a possible lose connection somewhere, but will try the module as have a spare one kicking around.

Thanks for the assistance all!
