Electronic Module???

Hi,

As per my previous post I've been having a bit of trouble with cable/wiring breakdown.

Last week I found the lug on the power cable snapped (at the starter motor connection). Ive done a temporary repair and all of my starter issues vanished.

On saturday I did a couple of hundred miles (to earls court for the custom bike show) and the bike ran great on the way up there (1993 Fat boy). On the way back I noticed a few signs of the starting issue rearing its ugly head. I put it down to my temporary repair.

When I got home I whipped off the seat for a quick check. I did find that the temporary connection at the starter motor wasn's as good as it once was.

But what I also found was another lug snapped off and a cable flapping in the wind! This one WAS connected to the negative terminal of the battery and goes to a small resin block about the size of a zippo which I can only assume is the electronics module from reading the manual??

Can anyone confirm that this is what it is? What does it do? Why did the bike still run with it disconnected?

I've made good all the connections today and all seems well, although the idle seems a little faster? Is this related?

Thanks for any information.

Matt

Re: Electronic Module???

Matt, I am a bit confused, as may be others judging by lack of replies.

the only cable attached to battery NEGATIVE would be the earth strap.....to a grounding point on the frame.... usually.

the only thing I can think of which resembles a ''small resin block'' may be the starter relay....with three connector points. But that wouldn't hook up to battery earth (negative) in any way I know. Prove me wrong!

likewise the ''electronic module'' .....you are maybe thinking of the electronic ignition module (way up the front of the bike on my 1985) .....but again......to battery earth? Strange......

Let us know what happens....

Re: Electronic Module???

Hi KiwiDave,

Yea, I'm a bit confused as well.

I have compared set-ups with my mates softail custom. He has the same module but it is connected to a large connector block under the seat. On further inspection it looks like this block has been looped out of the connector for some reason. I can only assume that there must have been a negative on this connector but a pin has snapped or something so they have gone straight to the negative terminal on the battery. The electrical drawing in the manual shows an electronic module connected to this connector.

I'm still a little unclear as to what it is though and why the bike ran/started with it disconnected! This module has one wire on one side (connected to battery) and two on the other side. I have a photo on my phone but I don't seem to be able to upload it?

Cheers
