I am about to have my UK registered 91 Electra Glide Classic transferred onto Spanish reg plates and I am required to supply the homologation (type approval) number to the authorities. It apparently looks like a chassis number but contains asterisks. Now, I can find the frame number stamped on the headstock(?) and a plate with the frame number and date of manufacture (03/91) on the right-hand downtube confirming that the vehicle complies with relevant safety standards at time of construction, and a smaller sticker with E1 in a circle and two 6 digit numbers by it - but nothing else.... Anyone know where I may find the type approval number and whether it is a unique number to the bike. If the number is just general to the model, could someone please be kind enough to tell me what the numbers are? Please feel free to PM me if this information should not appear on the internet. Thanks in advance Neil |

| Re: Where to find type approval number?
Google yielded the following: Harley Davidson Cyprus - Parallel Imports (EN) which might answer your question. I have owned my 1990 bike since new and don't recall any label like that on it. You may have to contact H-D UK.

Quote: They make very interesting reading and if I am understanding the information correctly a 1991 machine predates the requirement for a type approval number? I am not sure whether a Certificate of Conformity and a type approval number are the same thing anyway? Trying to get info out of the local HD dealer is a waste of time - they don't reply to emails, I imagine they're not interested in older machines.... Thanks again for your efforts. Neil |

| Re: Where to find type approval number?
My take on it is TA number was introduced from a certain date. If machine pre-dates that date then it requires a CoC stating that it conforms to the required standards to be registered for use in that country. When you say your local HD dealer is a waste of time I take it you mean in Spain. To be honest if I was Spanish and a Brit emailed me for info I'd prob ignore him too. Get down there and speak to them, with the amount of ex pats in Spain this must be a fairly standard routine. Ask them what it's going to cost to get your bike aproved for registration and I think you'll find they know everything about it all of a suden. ![]() There is going to be a fee, there's always a fee, just bite the bullet and get it done. If by chance your "local" dealer is in UK then they'll know as much about Spanish regs as I do. Now if it were a donkey then that is an animal that can be led or ridden but in Spain if you fit pannier baskets for load carrying then it is an agricultural conveyance and requires an amber flashing light if used on the road. ![]() Hope this helps. |

You have to remember that most of the current Harley dealers are only relatively young and many have changed hands in very recent years. There are not many out there who even knew what a Harley was in 1991! My nearest dealer started as the last evos were saying farewell, but one of their mechanics started on Harleys elsewhere and is ace on them, which is why I go there. He and one other are the only members of staff from that era. I wouldn't waste your time with a dealer, just go to H-D UK and phone them, don't email.

She is going to send a Certificate of Authenticity out to me in Spain. Apparently Certificates of Conformity are only available for bikes newer than year 2000. I'll see what turns up..... Neil |
