Primary & Trans Oil Change for 15,000 Mile Service ?

Hi.

I'm going to do a 15,000 mile service on my 98 FXSTC over the weekend.

Its currently at 16,500miles, (15,000 came in during the rally season).
So I was going to change the engine oil and filter as normal, along with
all the other checks the handbook mentions.

But according to my handbook, it says to change both the primary and transmission as well
(and then at every 5,000 miles afterwards; 20,000, 25,000, etc). The primary was changed
at the 10,000 mile service, but not the trans.

I thought the transmission oil was good to 20,000 miles (which was when
I was going to change it), along with the primary (as it will have done 10,000 miles).

So my question is; should I follow the handbook and change the primary and trans or leave
them until the 20,000 mile service ?

For my thoughts as the primary has only done 6,500 miles, I feel that it should still be ok, and
the trans fine to 20,000. And so needs just to have a engine oil and filter change and the other
checks mentioned.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Red face Re: Primary & Trans Oil Change for 15,000 Mile Service ?

Hi Dave,

I've owned my 1990 Evo since new and, while I am not dead punctual with service intervals, normally change those three fluids as per the service intervals at around 5k miles. I now have a wimpy S&S motor that demands fresh provisions every 2,500miles!

Hi
I think you can answer this yourself. How much is a new primary set up, or transmission? Ya can do a lot of oil changes for that!!! Ya cant beat fresh oil in your system mate.
Cheers
Paul

Paul sums it up well. The only thing that will wear out prematurely through too many oil changes is the thread on the drain plug!

Latest bikes are

Engine oil & filter = 5000mls

Primary = 10,000mls

Gearbox = 20,000mls

The above is taken from the 09 workshop manual. I doubt if the primary has been improved that much but oils have. I tend not to use Harley oil products.

Re: Primary & Trans Oil Change for 15,000 Mile Service ?

Hi Everybody.

Thanks for the replies.

I'll change all 3 oils plus do all the other checks.

So at 17,500miles I'll change the engine oil & filter and do
the other checks.
At 20,000 miles all change 3 again and the other checks.

So she gets new engine oil and filter every 2,500 miles
and new primary and transmission every 5,000 miles, along
with the checks the handbook states.

I always do the primary at 2.5k like the engine oll and it is always horrible! with lots of metal in it. Can't believe oil has improved that much that the new ones can 10k on primary oil !

Re: Primary & Trans Oil Change for 15,000 Mile Service ?

FormulA+ transmission & Primary
chaincsse lubricant
Developed with a proprietary mineral basestock formula,
TESTED-CERTIFIED by Harley-Davidson Motor Company.
Formulated to provide lubricity for the anti-wear requirements
of transmission gears. Formulated to maintain the coefficient
of friction for proper clutch operation and provide adequate
lubrication to the primary chain. Approved for use in all stages
of transmission and primary chaincase life. Not for use in the
crankcase as a motor oil.
Tested-certified extended service intervals:
Primary chaincase
84-later Big Twin models with wet-type diaphragm spring
clutch. Every 10,000 miles, or prior to winter or extended storage
periods.
Transmission
All Big Twin models. Every 20,000 miles, or prior to winter or
extended storage periods.
Primary/transmission
71-later XL and 83-84 XR1000 models. Every 10,000 miles,
or prior to winter or extended storage periods.

The way I read it is if you reach the stated mileage you change the oil, if you don't you still change the oil at least once a year.

IE If you started with new oil in January did 15,000 miles till December you change the engine oil twice, the primary twice and the transmission once, ready for the next year. If you ride less months and less miles you change all the oil once in a year regardless of the mileage.

I agree, mine looks grey and yuck at 2500...Gawd knows what it would look(and smell) like at 10,000...
