Running rough.

I have an 07 EFI 1200XL fitted with a K&N Filter, Vance & Hines 2-1 Blackout exhaust and a Vance & Hines Fuelpak. Recently the bike has developed a misfire, splutter or cough as she accelerates or cruises. I have cleaned the plugs, air filter and changed the fuel.

She still runs rough and sounds like fuel starvation but it isnt. There are no codes displayed when I look in diagnostic, so really stumped!

Re: Running rough.

Biggest problem with Sportsters is Battery lead connection and condition.
+ that year are susceptible to corrosion in the fuse & relay box.

Check battery leads for connection and condition especially the earth lead that will need the battery removing to get to.

Also take all fuses and relays out (one at a time) and clean them and smear with electrolytic grease before refitting, also clean the fuse sockets as best you can.

Re: Running rough.

100% with Urrell.
EFI works on voltage values,if you've got resistance somewhere,it gets bad info, and acts on that. But it won't see it as a fault,so no codes, you need at least two values that don't add up for a fault code.
I hope the clean up sorts it,but if not,I'd risk a set of new OE plugs.
Worst case, you'll have a spare set for the next service.

Re: Running rough.

just had similar problem with mine. OK when cold engine, but as soon as oil temp raised then bad misfiring at low revs. Check the crank position sensor. Very easy to replace (you can do it yourself in 10 minutes). The code doesn't always show and it's a very common problem with Sporty's

Re: Running rough.

Mine does it from cold to hot and all points inbetween. Hoping it can be sorted tomorrow with a little cleaning and fettling!

Re: Running rough.

Well, all fuses fine, quite clean before I gave them a going over. Sockets clean, fuses okay, relays too. Added Redex Injector additive to fresh fuel too.

Bike still runs like it's either cutting out or fuel starvation/restriction.

Battery cables, including the hard to do earth to engine?

Re: Running rough.

Had a similar problem on my 2005 XL1200R. Steady cruising fine, give it a handful and after the first blast up to about 90 it would start to fade and stutter, it seemed for all the world as though the needle valve was set wrong, inasmuch as the fuel wasn't getting to the carb fast enough.Only clue I found (after trying most things) was one plug shitted up, cleaned it, put it back, and (so far) no more problems. With hindsight I suspect a bit of muck had got into the system, although I'd blown the carb out thoroughly with compressed air a few times.

I'd agree with Dave that a new set of plugs wouldn't be a bad idea. If it turns out anything like mine it's effectively a process of elimination.

Re: Running rough.

re check the fuel pack settings, my 1200c ran like crap with the FP take particular notice when you have to roll the throttle to I think 50% then to full open.. my suggestion - dump the FP...
