883 to 1200 conversion adjustments

Morning.
Can anyone tell me if the timing has to be changed when converting from 883 to 1200
Also any other adjustments that you should be aware off when converted .

Timing will remain the same but you will have to adjust the fuel delivery. A change of underwear might be needed too!

Suggest this is moved to Evo Sportsters area though where it might get more replies

Re: 883 to 1200 conversion adjustments

What type of conversion has been done? There are two options -varying volumes of reverse dome 3.498" pistons which are commonly used in rebored jugs and the stock 883 heads .. depending on what compression ratio you want. Or the SE 1200 kit which uses flat top 3.498" pistons and the much better suited 1200 heads. Whatever yours is, the compression will be higher than the stock 883 setup - so yes you would benefit from advanced timing. Not neccessary but you're missing out by using the stock timing curve. I touched on the shortcomings of the 883 heads .. The stock 883 heads do not flow anywhere near enough to support the 36% increase in swept volume that a 1200 conversion produces so again you're losing out on power .. This chart shows the airflow rates of a stock 883 head and what can be achieved to match the requirements of the 1200 engine.

There is nothing wrong with this type of conversion. Yes, it's not going to squeeze the last drop of performance out of the engine but most people who convert their Harleys are just looking for some more power not all the power and engine will make. Even those who say they are after all the power soon cool off when the costs are revealed.

Enjoy your conversion Steve, it sounds to me that you are more than happy with the result.

Re: 883 to 1200 conversion adjustments

Thank you both for the info

For the moment I need to break her in, so will see how it goes.

I did buy a new battery (not a harley one an equivalent) and that has boiled and buckled before the conversion, took it back for a replacement and did the same again,so the old battery is being charged ready for the first ride.

Thanks again and will let you know how it goes, as 55mph for 500 miles is going to be a while for me

Kind regards
Steve

All you need is 50 miles of acceleration/deceleration .. You want to build pressure and vaccuum across the rings and then they're as sealed as they're ever going to be. Change the oil after 50 miles then get on with riding it ..

Great advice about running in the engine! Did you use the answer to this post?

Re: 883 to 1200 conversion adjustments

Sorry to disappoint but that's it from me. I've already risen to the bait after promising myself I wouldn't. Now Alex can reply as he likes or not. I know what I know from many years of experience, not a few.

I apologise to the moderators for allowing this to degenerate into a slinging match in the Technical forums.
