speedo reset

I have a problem with my speedo/mileometer. I had to put in a new battery and now I can't reset the speedo etc. Any help would be much appreciated.

more info; this is on my sportster but not original. it has a watch battery inside which had died and now it just flashes a small mph on the screen. there is a tiny push in button/toggle at the front of the casing but pressing this doesn't do anything. all the idiot lights work fine as does the rev counter

pic looks like a tacho not a speedo but since you dont mention the make it a bit difficult to make any comments. i would suggest the internal battery maintained some information that, going flat, has been lost but you would do well to find some sort of name or reference numbers and research it on the web.
