tyre choices

i need to get some new tyres for my xl53c and had pretty much decided on avon venoms, but i have been told by my local dealer that they dont come in the sizes i need.
is that right?
and can anyone reccomend some other decent brands that are not to pricey.

Re: tyre choices

I don't know what tyre sizes you need but you can check out if they do them here:

Re: tyre choices

Hi, Have just had some Metzeler ME880 Marathons fitted to my year 2000 XL53C, I spent ages trawling through this forum and others and the Metzelers seemed to be well recomended. If you go onto www.metzelermoto.com and click onto "your fitment" you can bring up your model and it lists the tyre sizes. For our bikes it is Front. 80/90-21m/c 48H ME880. Rear 130/90B16m/c REINFTL 73H ME880. I had mine fitted at my local National Tyres depot, if you go through their internet site they list what depots in your area are motorcycle fitters. I was charged £131.95 for the pair including balancing and old case disposal, that includes a 10% internet ordering discount. They're nice looking tyres but I haven't tried them out in anger yet. I took the wheels of myself and took them in loose,as it gives you a good chance to give everything a good clean up.

Re: tyre choices

Conti Tours are good - better than Dunlops and are a pretty good compromise between an 'everyday' compound and a more sporty one. Try Bike Tyre Store in Birmingham. They do next day delivery too!

Re: tyre choices

called northants v twin and spoke to a very friendly guy called dave. he can do conti tours for just under £200 fitted, which isnt to bad to me. i tried the dealer again and he said its because they were limited to brands, but he could do 2 firestones for £220 for the tyres and wait for it....£125+vat for fitting!!! when i said fcukme, thats a lot for fitting, he said its because its not just a tyre fitting service, its done by "trained mechanics!!!!!!!"
i couldnt give a toss if it was done by trained monkeys, for that sort of money i would want a gold plated reciept!!!! dave at northants vtwin nearly fell off his stool laughing!!! he charges the princely sum of £15 for fitting!
im starting to think that this stealer is having a laugh, first they cant get any other types of tyre except dunflops( which are a very very good tyre sir!), and then they can get a special firestone fitment that will take 2 weeks to get in and for the priveledge i have to pay a mechanical genius a small fortune!!
anyone else had any dealings with silverstone HD? nowhere near as good as sycamore.

Re: tyre choices

After a rear puncture decided to change the tyres on my 2005 Sportster 1200R - choice seemed to be between Avon Venoms & Metzelers me 880`s, finally decide on Metezler Me880 Marathons .........good web site www.metzelermoto.co.uk.

Very pleased and feel much more secure than the factory fitted Dunlops - in my view it transformed the bike handling.

Other problem was reflating the tyre & then getting it 30 miles to Micheldever Tyres - all local dealers had excuses , machine broken , wrong paddock stand delays etc .

Finally found the Holts Temporary Tyre Repair Areosol sold in Halfords Motorcycle section - £6 did the trick - looks like shaving foam going into the tyre. - Now always carry a can just incase.

Were your tyres tubed or tubeless? I assume the tyre aerosol was very effective, I'm curious about it's effectiveness on tubed tyres.

Re: tyre choices

I'm having to replace the Dunlop on the rear of my 1200 S, as it is clapped out after less than 4000 miles! Will the Metzeler or Avon 'mix' with the Dunlop still on the front? As I don't really want to have to replace it unless, everything would go 'pear-shaped' on the first decent corner!!
Regards

DD

Re: tyre choices

I kept my dunflop on the front until 12/13k on my RK while I went through the orig dunflop and a conti on the rear. No problems. Then went on to Metz front and rear.
