Air Filters

Got a 2004 883 Sporty, and have now upgraded front and rear suspension, so it now goes round corners.

Now thats fixed am looking to make it run better. Don't want a loud exhaust so am looking at upgrading the air filter. How much is a SE setup, and what other options are they. Is it worth doing just the Air filter with the original exhausts?

It runs like an asmatic camel at the moment, specially at town speeds - jerky on the throttle

have a look at this thread:

may be worth considering if you want an alternative look!
The cost is about $140+$25shipping to UK, for full '400' kit to fit sporty.

Re: Air Filters

hi, the full stage 1 is really worth doing as it turns the bike into something completely different. not sure how effective just a filter change would be but give it a go. the SE filter is a K&N, so you may be able to do it cheaper going through them rather than going for SE branded stuff.

Re: Air Filters

Hi,

Yes I would say the air filter is worth doing, my 883 2003 sporty has the standard exhaust with just a K&N filter in the standard air box.
I may point out that the filter was nearly as much as the screaming eagle filter set ????
Performance has improved although I have increased the pilot jet to .45
the main jet still remains a .165 ( standard on mine).

Found that fitting a braided front brake hose helps when trying to stop
hel are about £25 per length including end fittings .

hope this helps

Re: Air Filters

Just done it on my '05 883R.
Pipes are stock as I use it to commute.

The air filter and carb mods give a much bigger increase in performance than changing the pipes.

Both kits are relatively easy to fit with a minimum of tools.

The latest SE air filter is not a K&N or the previous Blue version that fell to bits.
It is a dry, oil less filter and high flow back plate too. It also re-directs the breathers directly into the mouth of the carb.
Just fitting a K&N to the standard air box will not have the same effect.

The SE Dynojet kit has the same parts as the US 883 & 1200 Dynojet kits, but the EU Dynojet kits are different, the 883 version having completely different jets and emulsion tube.

You will get quite a performance boost and ride ability from just doing the carb and filter.

I got my stuff from the US at a considerable saving over the UK price, but did have a large order, for just two items you may well be better off using Guernsey H-D with free postage and a 17.5% saving over the UK price.

FYI

'04 - '05 Sportster

SE Air Filter Kit 29042-04A UK £102.32, Guernsey £87.08, US $87.24 {Plus shipping, handling, duty, collection fee etc.}
SE Dynojet Kit 29045-97B UK £77.50, Guernsey £65.96, US $57.62 {Plus shipping, handling, duty, collection fee etc.}

Dynojet USA

Dynojet EU
http://www.dynojet.com/jetkits/motor...arley_euro.php

www.guernseyharleydavidson.com/

I have it set up pretty much as per the '04 on Dynojet instructions and runs well but have not yet fully carried out a true comprehensive check, partly due to it being so damn cold!
E.G. Proper plug chops at full bore or had time to really guage any mpg change and full range checks.

Pilot jet stock
Air Screw 3 & 1/4 turns out.
Needle on clip position 4 (this is where the '04 on Dynojet instructions differ from the SE one which say Position 3, but the SE do cover the earlier models too.)
170 main Jet {Which is the size of the stock UK main jet!}

Further medling may be required but it is at worst is pretty close to ideal.

Sorry to be pedantic (who, me?) but, if you deduct VAT at 17.5% from the gross price, the 'saving' is actually equivalent to 14.9%. It may not make much difference to the appeal of buying from Guernsey, though, as the free postage is an additional attraction.

They way it is worked out .{I am sure you actually know this though but for explanation purpose.}

H-D UK Retail price excluding VAT for Part 29042-04A is £87.08p
The Guernsey H-D price!

£87.08 x 17.5% = £15.24 which is the VAT,
add the VAT to £87.08 = £102.32 UK retail price including VAT.
Thus you have paid 17.5% more or saved 17.5% of the H-D UK Retail price excluding VAT.

It's the way you look at it!;)

PS To be fair to Guernsey HD, they just say that you don't pay the VAT, rather than that you save 17.5%

Re: Air Filters

17.5% ADDED to the ex. VAT price gives the inc. VAT price, whilst 14.9% DEDUCTED from the inc. VAT price takes you back down to the net figure again.

I knew you knew what you were talking about, I just couldn't resist having a poke. ;)

Re: Air Filters

Another point to consider is that Guernsey are an Official UK dealer, so you will get a full UK warranty on parts, but parts sourced from the USA are often only covered by a 90 day warranty!
