Question Forward Controls/Highway Pegs

Well, after futile attempts to find some reasonably priced forward controls, I've decided to just get some bleedin' Highway Pegs.

I mean - over 300 bleedin' notes!?! That again, and I could get my 1200 conversion!!

So, has anyone got any ideas about Highway Peg prices?? Do they come with all of the fittings, or do you have to buy them separate?? If that's the case, can you get any kind of Sporty pegs, or are they specifically made for the forward fittings??

Any advice would be ace, as I need to stretch my legs!!

Re: Forward Controls/Highway Pegs

Hi Riffter

Yeah I've been down this road myself - have to say would also like forward controls but hefty price tag!! Got a MID control Dyna and think it would be good for Motorway miles.

If you looking at pegs then consider some other than HD - Custom Chrome, Kuryakyn etc may be cheaper?

They are generally made up of 2 pieces - the support that mounts to the frame and then the peg itself.

The support being the cheaper bit and the less flash. then add to that the style of peg you like - maybe to match your bar grips etc?

Happy hunting !

Dont forget ,that what costs £300 here ,cost about $300 in the US. Find a dealer that offers 20% off and you will be saving a lot of money, even including P&P and Customs charges.

Re: Forward Controls/Highway Pegs

That would be ideal Sal - I've previously seen some for $170.00, with $110.00 postage. S'pose that would be about £160.00? But these are the cheaper chromed numbers. But had a bad experience with USA purchases.

My missus got some boots from the States, and she was hit for a fortune for import tax, stamp duty and handling fees. Can't remember exactly, but some were fixed rate, some charges were by percentage.

Long story short, the boots (Harley boots as it happens) ended up costing close on to the UK price - and what with the extended delivery, it wasn't really worth it. However, this was by air mail - maybe the charges would be different by ground (although they could then take aeons to arrive).

I don't really know enough about it, but is there any way of avoiding these charges? Maybe the missus did it all wrong?

Cheers,

Riffter

Re: Forward Controls/Highway Pegs

There are ways to avoid charges. Know someone in the US? Have the goods sent to them and then they send them on to you ,marked as a gift?
Get the dealer to put a much lower value on the customs ticket(although I would imagine there would not be many dealers that would do this).

I know I always go on about chicagoharley ,but I can't help it if I have always had good service from them. I ordered goods that would cost nearly £700 here. Total CC bill was £350 + change . Also had to pay the UPS guy £90 in charges .Admittedly the £-$ rate was slightly more favourable than it is now .Whatever way you look at it,that is a quite tidy saving.

Genuine H-D forwards (for 04+ Sportys) cost $349.95 .At www.chicagoharley.com you would get a 20% discount ,bringing it down to $280 or roughly £160 . By my reckoning ,and this is purely based on similar amounts I have spent ,using UPS as the carrier, you would have to pay around £45-£50 on top of that .If that is correct youre already looking at a 30% saving on UK price which cant be bad.

Please feel free to get recommendations for other dealers. Some think chicagoharley are OK ,some dont . I know there are others ,but cant tell you what they are...cos I cant remember

Re: Forward Controls/Highway Pegs

Thanks for taking the time to write Sal, I'll certainly look into it!

I'm in the same boat as most - trying to balance out how much to spend, and on what! I'm going on a tour in the Easter Hols (one good thing about being a Teacher!!), and wanted some form of forwards for then, but it's only two weeks away! Gonna be cruisin' around the Lakes and the Dales, and wanted to do it in comfort. May have to just get highway pegs for now, forwards later, then fit the pegs as passengers later if that's possible and flog the highway peg fittings??

Also need Passenger pegs for the Missus, and was pondering sling over saddles. On top of this, I really want the 1200 conversion and a new garage........moan...........grumble..........I sound like a spoilt child!!

Cheers,

Riffter

Re: Forward Controls/Highway Pegs

Give Three Counties Customs a bell, i bought my forwards from them and i'm sure they were about £175.00 including all the little necassarys like VAT.

Re: Forward Controls/Highway Pegs

I've got some Highway peg arms up T shed kept 'em when I chnged to forwrad controls, they were only on the bike a few months you can have 'em if you like but you will have to buy the actual foot pegs themselves. Came of a 98 sporster, which is having some new wheel bearings fitted but thats another story!

Wont be able to reply till sat cause I'm looking after Chiefy's pussy!
