| First service.
My girlfriend has just bought a 2005 883 with less than 500m on it, so far so good, like an idiot though I believed the seller that the first service would still be free,..ooh no! only to the first owner sir.(that's from the original supplier). So, do I just need a stamp from a shop to keep the warranty valid? or must it be a main dealer? sorry, I know this has been a topic before but I am still unsure. Ta. |

Ok, over here at least you can get the service done wherever you like. Make sure you keep a receipt showing: date, mileage & materials. Over here also, the service is actually paid for at the time of purchase & remains with the bike, not the purchaser.

| Re: First service. To keep it brief, No you do not have to have the book stamped or main dealer serviced to keep the warranty valid. EU law requires a manufacturer to supply a warranty against faulty workmanship and components. All that is required is that the motorcycle is operated and maintained to the manufacturer's recommendations, it does not have to be maintained at a main agent, it does not even have to use their oil, but if not it must be of a similar or better standard. Most importantly, the bias has shifted in the respect of the manufacturer not honouring the warranty by them having to prove that a failure was due to the machine not being used or maintained as required rather than the owner proving the failure was due to a manufacturer's fault or workmanship. You are also covered by UK consumer law. So all that is required is:- 1 It does need to be serviced when required. 2 It does not need to be serviced by a main dealer or any dealer as long as it is done correctly and competently. 3 The manufacturer must be notified promptly and given reasonable opportunity to rectify any faults. 4 If there is a dispute, the manufacturer has to prove it is due to a failure of something other than their workmanship or recommended use. That said any receipts and evidence of work carried out would substantiate and bolster any claim. Most main dealers 2 and 4 wheels will try and tell you that the above is not the case. . |

| Re: First service.
i think this is down to the dealer, two of my previous bikes have been free first service, but another one wasnt, the dealer said that it was down to thier discretion and they could charge if they liked. if its not free, do it your self, its just a fluid and filter change and a general check over of the bike, check the nuts and bolts are tight, etc. i did my first service on my last new biike for Ł25. dan |
