2004 883 Sportster mixture setting

Hello Folks.
First time on the forum or the web site. Looks like a dam fine one at that.
I've got a 2004 883 sportster that's spitting back through the carbs, I usually start and let her idle for a min' or two on full choke or should I say enricher, after a few miles I push the enricher button back in 1/2 way and ride like that for a few miles until she is warmed up, she runs fine during that period, I then push the enricher button full in.
After about 5-6 miles she should be at working temp but she spits back just as I'm coming of the idle 1/8 part thottle at a roundabout or moving away from a juncton. not all the time mine you, but usualy when your not expection it.
When I'm "feathering" the throttle riding in a built up area I'm in 4th gear but she also surges/stutters sitting at 30mph.
I know it's a lean mixture so I turned the mixture screw full in thinking the engine would start to stumble but it doesn't, it still runs. What way enriches the idle on the 04 sportsters? is it screw in or screw out?
It's had a stage one tune done on it with screaming eagle ballony pipes,
could anyone tell me what jet numbers I should have on main jet and pilot jet
she excelerates through the gears o.k. but top end is only about 90-95mph.
she doesn't bog down at top speed with throttle full open or speed up when I slightly close the throttle at top speed she just goes to 90mph and sits there. It's not that I'm a heavy Bugger I'm only a slight 15 stone.
if I knew what the jet number should be it would give me a place to start before I remove the carb for tinkering.

Re: 2004 883 Sportster mixture setting

Hi
dorsal gunner ,welcome to the site.
I've got a 04 883 i brought from new with SE 11 pipes and SE air filter and it would spit and pop a lot when warmed up.
At the 5km service the dealer changed the pilot jet from 42 to 45 and recalibrated the ignition module with a updated program.
This cured most of the problem although i still get the odd pop and spit occaisionslly it will (don't tell Bexx) do over the ton with ease.
Did you get the bike from new,if its still under warranty i would take it back.
Check back through earlier posts, theres alot of info about this on the site.

Re: 2004 883 Sportster mixture setting

It sounds as if you need is a tweek on that mixture screw to start with.

It is a mixture adjustment not an air screw, so un-doing, ie anti-clockwise will enrich the mixture.

Set the idel and get the off idel right before progressing onto tuning the next stage.

The jet size will depend on what set up your have. IE Bog stock or pipes & filter etc. but be aware it could have a Dynojet kit fitted, if so there is extra adjustment on the slide needle too.

See the link Phil has posted there is the dynojet instruction sheet link there.

Standard HDI for an '04 is 170 main 42 slow.

Cool Re: 2004 883 Sportster mixture setting

Hi.
I don't know but this may help, I have a 2005 883,a nice bike but spoilt by abysmal carb set up from the factory, the bike is standard apart from me spiking the standard silencers coz it sounded like a B.M.W. I have gone up on the pilot jet to a 45,took out that stupid bung over the mixture screw richened the mixture by turning the screw 1/4 turn in. The main is jetted rich on these models 170 so I kept that standard.
The bike starts well and you can do away with the choke the same as my carburated big twins, this has transformed the bike and it carburates real nice and goes surprisingly well, I had a staged anniversary 883c that was not a patch on this one, once you are rolling the forced air system that is standard works really well I had it showing 120 on the clock on the M49 going to Riders I was flat on the tank and I have ten witnesses from our club that were well surprised, the bike is overgeared it will show 110 in fourth on the limiter then fifth will gradually build it really needs an extra tooth on the rear pully. In my opinion everyone is too eager to stage their bikeswhen a little set up is often all that is needed, seems a lot of money to pay to make your bike slower and use more fuel. I enjoy the little sporty so much I am leaving the B.Ts and the S+s at home and riding the sporty through Spain to Calafell and the Catalunya Moto G.P. in June
Hope this helps,
Captain

Re: 2004 883 Sportster mixture setting

Folks.
Yeh, bought the bike used only 3,000 odd miles on the clocks, I done the 5000 mile service myself because I didn't think £160 odd was worth it for an oil and filter change, although I went to the dealers to buy the proper HD filter and oils, I've owned bsa's and trumpets since I was 16 so know these pretty well with the old amals ect, but I havn't owned a
harley (Great bike to ride) or a bike with a CV type carb before, so I needed some info ect before I start looking to inprove on performance.
I'll open up the carb and have a look at the jets, I like a good fettle, many thanks for your information is much appreciated.
Hope you all have a good summer.
