Re: Heavy handed

Have you tried a pair of good vice grips? and when you get it clamped, give the grips a tap with a mallet or light hammer, the jar should free it.

Re: Heavy handed

Had exactly the same problem with rear caliper. Tried everything in the book and then some. Final result was the nut shearing off flush with the caliper - tap and dye time. Thought I was going same way with front, but liberal penetrating oil plus gentle heat plus mole grips just did the job. Had to get new nipples though.

I think (will probably be corrected ) it is probably because of a mis-match of metal. The bleed nipple looks brassy whilst the caliper is presumably ally.

Makes life very difficult for routine bleeding when changing pads, have never had this problem on any other brake system

Re: Heavy handed

when replacing the nipples put a small amount of copper grease on the threads only, take care not to get any in the holes, vasaline will do the same job but wont last as long, pencil lead can work as well,.....mmmmm nipples, vasaline, pencil lead, is this thread open to abuse????

Re: Heavy handed

swampig - I think you should open this thread in the beer tent - then it would definitely get abused

Re: Heavy handed

Be careful using any copper based grease in conjunction with ally, as the two metals will react to the detriment of the ally, the copper being the more "noble" metal, if there is any sort of electrical cell set up, then the ally will corrode! My head was full of all this many years ago as an apprentice working on aircraft, where it can be a bit of a problem!!

never had a problem with it myself, but maybe the graphite in the pencil lead or Vasaline might be a safer way, can see where it would be a safety issue in the Aircraft industry tho s'pose graphite grease could be used instad of copperslip.... just found this http://sw-em.com/anti_seize.htm this might just be the stuff for all the bolts and screws into ally on bikes http://www.loctite.com/int_henkel/loctite_uk/index.cfm
