Carb still farts a little....

Hi all -

I've wracked up over 700 miles in the last few weeks, and I'm seriously enjoying my Sporty!! Took a bit of getting used to, I must admit - especially roundabouts!! But now I'm in love !!

Only problem lies with the odd carb fart. She did it lots when it was wintery, but the fuel additive predominantly sorted it. However, she still does it infrequently, regardless of temperature or how 'warmed up' she is. She only generally does it when in low gears going off the revs ie going around tight bends and not keepng the revs up. And she also does it sometimes when blipping the throttle after dropping gears.

I vaguely remember someone posting that Stage 1'd Sportys do give the odd carb fart, and this is normal - and if that's the case, then I'm cool with it, 'cos it's not really a big issue. However, if it's an anomaly, and no-one else's does it, I'd be a little concerned.

Cheers,

Riffter

I've had 2 new bikes-both the same even after stage 1.Doubt you'll totally eliminate it without some serious £££s and then having to stop at every fuel station. My new 05 model seems worse than my 2000 model.Anybody else notice that?

Hi Have the same problem on my 04 XL. got used to it now and can usualy sense when to expect it.
See the above link to my previous thread for help if you fancy a go at looking at rectifying the problem yourself.
I havn't tried getting down to the problem yet due to working , I ride my harley throughout the year and I've noticed it's not as bad these mornings as opposed to when I rode during really cold mornings of the winter, I recon it takes a good 10 mile before the engine is at proper operating temperature.

Re: Carb still farts a little....

Try turning the mixture screw out a 1/4 revolution, i.e. anti clockwise as you look at the screw head and see if it improves.
If it does improve but not fully clear it, try another 1/4 revolution.

You may well get some spitting by blipping the throttle as you are dumping raw fuel into the Venturi via the accelerator pump, this does depend though on how vigorous you are doing it though.

The link above will be very useful.

Re: Carb still farts a little....

Cheers Folks,

I'll have a fettle with the mixture screw and see what happens. As I said, when she's warmed up she only does it rarely, but it's a bit annoying. Still, having browsed all of the related posts, it seems that it's real common and it often just has to be put up with.

Only reason it is so annoying is that I work about 12 miles away, and she's only just warmed up properly when I get there. This is not much good for the internals . It's cool when I leave work 'cos I usually go for a blast for an hour or so.

Still, I'm thinking about getting hold of an old Bandit or something for work and short trips, as I'm 100% biker (never bothered with car license as cars are no fun!), and I sold my FZ to fund the Sporty.

Re: Carb still farts a little....

I was a bit concerned about my 1200r which suffers the odd fart. Then I went to the Brighton run last summer and practically every Sportster that I saw (or rather heard) drive by did it.

I'd get concerned if it did it all the time but to a certain extent, I think its a case of "They all do that sir".

This is true and it often catches out riders who have converted from Jap bikes and are used to warming up in under 5 miles.

My 883 was fitted with a SE Keihin carb and would regularly spit through the filter, but it never felt like it was not running correctly. I wouldn't lose any sleep about this happening.
