Rejet after SE pipes removed

I finally took the plunge last night and removed the SEII pipes from my 1200r. They sounded great when I thrashed the old girl but they were just as noisy when I was burbling about around town or cruising at 70mph on the motorway.

"Rolling thunder" has been replaced with "passing flatulence" and I now own what sounds like a 1200cc sewing machine. Why no-one makes a pipe which is louder than standard but doesn't cause small children to spontaeously bleed from the eardrums is beyond me.

Anyway....

The bike still has the SE air cleaner, dynojet kit and lightweight carb slide. Presumably, the jetting will need taking down a bit or at least the mixture screw will need a tweek. Any recommendations?

vance and hines do supply a variety of systems for which street legal baffles are available, but I know what you mean sometime its either earplugs or tinitus

besides noise does not equal power, quite the opposite actually;)

Re: Rejet after SE pipes removed

Yeah, I feel the same way......never fitted the loud mufflers except for testing and deciding they were too much. Still looking for a good compromise exhaust.

I did change the air filter and and dyno jet to move away from a lean stock setup.

If you did the original change you can tweak the settings again, maybe a drop in main jet size and a turn of the mixture screw.

I think running it will show whats needed.

This will sound like a stupid question (be gentle with me) but where is the mixture screw? The carb only seems to have one adjuster and thats for tickover. Is it under some sort of anti-tamper thingummy?

Re: Rejet after SE pipes removed

Yeah mixture screw comes factory preset, hidden under a plug. BUT if yours has been stage one'd that plug would? have been removed.

It is underneath the carb...at the back....to see the hole where you stick your screw driver to adjust it, you have to get down very low when the carb is in situ.....(and you want to adjust it while the engine is running)....most do it by feel....and burn their fingers.

There are a whole host of stuff on the web about tuning stage one etc....some of contradictory.

Your right about the tickover adjusting screw being on the top.

I'm not sure your jetting will need changing. You've still got your SE air cleaner on, right? So that'll still be letting as much air in, so you'll still need as much fuel to give you a correct mixture. What do the plugs look like?

Re: Rejet after SE pipes removed

Here is the US Dynojet instruction sheets for an '04 -'06 1200 Sportie, it is the same as the H-D SE kit and gives recomended jet sizes for set up.
I think you will find it very helpful, you may well not have to change any of the settings other than a tweek on mixture screw and possibly the down size the main jet.

Thunderslide instructions.

Re: Rejet after SE pipes removed- Peace makers

Those PeaceMakers would be an interesting tuning exercise.....from baffled to drag.
