Question tappet noise?

I have an annoying ticking sound coming from the R/H side of my engine, could it be a tappet/s can you adjust them or do I need clean service anything?

Re: tappet noise?

The tappets are hydraulic and set themselves as long you have plenty of oil in the tank. I take it the noise is when the engine is running and not cooling down. Have you done anything to engine lately?

Re: tappet noise?

Is the noise there all the time?

If the engine is cold it is normal for the tappets to click until they refill with oil. If the tappets stop clicking after the engine is run for a few minutes, they are working properly.

Ticking? Check wrist for lost watch

Re: tappet noise?

yeah its there all the time. I thought maybe the lifters had stuck a little as it seems to be in that area. I am going to do an oil change, new plugs ,filter etc and a few other jobs this w/e. the bike does pop on overun, going down hill with throttle shut, its very annoying and it has the usual carb farts. there is an oil screen filter somewhere (no manual ) that may need cleaning
It has SE slash cuts and presumably standard carburation/filter
me watch is electronic

Re: tappet noise?

O.K. Then

Clymer manual for valve train noise says:

a. Bent pushrod(s)
b. Faulty hydraulic lifter(s)
c. Bent valve
d. Rocker arm seizure or damage (binding on shaft)
e. Worn or damaged cam gear bushing(s)
f. Worn or damaged cam gear(s)

Its only done 10k so the wear thing might be a little premature, it gets louder when engine gets warmer maybe it just need new oil might even be a natural noise aah sh*t am gonner have to take it to the dealers an let them have a listen

Re: tappet noise?

This is a question I get asked by new Sportster owners.
They tick, esp. 883 (don`t know why, don`t know what yours is) esp. when hot.
At 10,000 the motor is barely worn in.
There is no oil screen.

Re: tappet noise?

on an Evo Big Twin recommended replacement is around 30-40K

that oil screen needs cleaning annually

i am sure someone here can direct you to it - it **could** be a matter of a 5min clean with petrol and the noise stops if the filter is clogged

always try the CHEAPEST fix first

EDIT: No oil screen?????? Wow

Re: tappet noise?

i get a ticking noise when im riding but only when on the throttle, ive put it down to exhaust noise as i have fairly open pipes. it goes in time with the throttle, but doesnt sound like a tick when stationary. i also get a lot of noise from the gas cap that sounds like a loud rattle.
sporties just make a bit of noise and ive come to accept it as character!!!
