Re: Expert Help Please!

I'm a bit shocked at teh price of a Stage 1!

Surely it is a matter of a re-jet, 'less restrictive' air filter and slip ons....£600????

..as for the rest, I think I would go for 'new' and customise as money and such permits.

Welcome to the site by the way!

Re: Expert Help Please!

Thanks for all your help! I have decided on the 05 Sportster custom 1200 and I think I can get a sundowner seat quite cheap from America so if it is as easy to fit as you guys have said I will be able to do it myself!

I will do the stage 1 and se exhausts at a later date if I feel the need!

I will let you all know when I get it!

Thanks for the welcomes!

Jason

Re: Expert Help Please!

The Sportster is fun in what ever form. I've had three over the last few years & still have one whilst running a softail. I would ask though if you are going to do a little more two up the Dyna range maybe a better option in terms of engine performance and comfort/room for you and passenger.
The world of Harley is an open cheque book. It depends how much you want to spend and how you get on. As others say always try before you buy and try with two up over a fair distance; if the dealers wants your customer he shouldn't be too upset.

I would say for the price a little steep.

Re: Expert Help Please!

I need more Help!

I can't find a used Sportster Custom 1200 in vivid black (I just missed an 05 model for £5750) so I am considering a brand new one. They are £7495 standard and the dealer in Edinburgh is offering them for £6995. Is this fair? Used ones with some mods seem to go for more than this?!

I have decided that this is the one I want but I want a fair deal!

Sounds OK to me. A used one with some mods may be a good deal, if they're exactly the mods you want. If you end up replacing the modded bits with something else which you prefer, you end up paying for them twice!

At least if you get a new one you can fit exactly what you want, when you can afford it.

Whichever way you go you're gonna love it! Let us know what you decide.

Re: Expert Help Please!

I would definitely go for a bike with forwards fitted - my 05 Sportster has mid pegs and they are a nightmare - but then I have only just started riding it and the chop had forwards. The forwards took a bit of getting used to but after a couple of times out on the chop I like them much better than mid foot rests - I keep forgetting they are there and have got into all kinds of trouble with getting my jeans caught on the pegs when I set off and keep hitting my shins on them - which hurts - a lot

Re: Expert Help Please!

Update:

My beloved Ducati 748 was collected by its new owner today and at 1pm rode out of my life forever (Or so I thought). It was a sad moment, I loved that bike!

At 3pm I signed on the dotted line at my local Harley Dealer for a brand new Sportster 1200 Custom in Vivid Black, no mods yet but I plan to buy the layback number plate from Guernsey and fit it myself and maybe later on when funds permit do the stage 1.

Incidentally I paid £6500 for it from my nearest dealer which whilst a great deal doesn't exactly live up to the 'Harley don't discount' mentality I had been hearing elsewhere! Is there a new model on the horizon? Pha...I don't care I just can't wait until Tuesday when I pick it up!

I got a call at 5pm from the guy riding my...sorry, his Ducati back to London (from Bolton) a fuse kept blowing. I have not had one problem with the bike in the 2 years I owned it but then I never tried to ride to London. The voltage regulator had overheated and was causing a short. I never had any confidence in the Ducati for long rides and now I am glad it has gone!

The other half is going to have to wait for her sundowner comfy seat though as I have really stretched my budget and I have decided she will have to do without the backrest, I think it makes the bike look smaller, kinda like putting an exclamation mark before the end of the sentence!

Anyway, thanks for all your help and I will post a few pics when I get it!

Jason
