Subject: Safety Recall Campaign 0125

Dear Harley-Davidson Dealer:

Harley-Davidson Motor Company, Inc. has decided that a condition affecting safety exists on certain 2004 and 2005 model year Sportster 883R and 1200R motorcycles built from June 25, 2003 to June 3, 2005. The front master brake cylinder assembly installed on these vehicles had been built by a supplier with inadequate lubrication on the secondary cup. This could cause the sliding resistance of the piston to be excessive, which in turn could cause the return of the piston to be slow upon release of the brake. In extreme cases, the piston may not return completely. If this happens, the rear brake light could remain illuminated which could result in a crash or injuries without warning.

We have voluntarily declared this a defect related to motor vehicle safety (Campaign 0125) to allow us to formally recall all affected motorcycles. The remedy is to rebuild the master cylinder, on the models listed above. Please reference the Service Bulletin for a detailed description of the defect.

In the interest of the safety of our mutual customers and as required by law, you may sell but NOT DELIVER any affected motorcycles to your customers. A service bulletin outlining the repair and credit procedure, along with a list of affected VIN’s, will follow within two weeks. This bulletin will also contain credit procedures required to rebuild the master cylinder on the models listed above.

In accordance with Federal regulations administered by NHTSA, Harley-Davidson Motor Company, Inc. will provide notice to all owners of record of affected products with direction to bring the vehicle in for the recall service.

Yes indeed Dermot, had lots of these sticky brake levers. All we have been doing is pulling the innards out, stretching the spring then putting them back together. Works a treat & takes less than five minutes.
Have`nt even been charging the Moco, too much paperwork.
