Does it make much difference? What sort of mileage do 1200 owners get ?

Thumbs up Re: Fuel gauge

Riding locally about 100 miles, then I definately fill up. On the m/way its about 120 miles.

On the way to the International last year it read 123 miles on the trip, then I was touching cloth .

Re: Fuel gauge

You will get used to it, we all have.

Run till you go on reserve, try to be near home. Drain off reserve, measure it and worl out how far you can on on reserve.

I only get about 120 on my tank but then it is not a Sporty one. The original peanut tank was a bit of a pain doing only 70 till reserve.

Dont laugh about a lighter to look in a petrol tank, my mate done it on a James Captain. Nice little blue flame bobbing about the filler hole. We ran about 300 yards away and waited. Luckily nothing happened, it just went out. I then called hima lot of bad names

Re: Fuel gauge

I normally go to about 125 - 130 before worrying about filling up on my 99 883/1200 sporty. Haven't a clue how far the reserve is, it's got to be about 40 miles but the last time I tried it I chickened out 30 miles when I saw a garage.

Re: Fuel gauge

Yeah Use the trip. Mine is on trip all the time(2002) and I fill up at about 110 miles. It will do about 120 before reserve, but the newer ones about 130-140 before reserve. So in your case I would always look for a guarage about 120. If you do go on reserve always remember to switch it back to normal or you will really be f****d if you run out of fuel next time round.

Re: Fuel gauge

Yep, I use the trip meter?Leave it on that all the time . Always fill up at around 100-110 miles or so out of habit .

Post Re: Fuel gauge

One evening I was about to set off for the Sussex Coasters meet in Chichester. I looked at the trip meter and saw I should easily be able to get down to Chichester before I needed to fill up. My route takes me up and over the South Downs on a fairly steep hill (Duncton Hill). Half way up the hill the engine started to falter and I had to make a grab for the petcock and switch it onto reserve. Going up the hill had changed the fuel level in the tank. Once over the hill (no comments, thank you!) I switched it back to 'on', and it was OK the rest of the way. Just glad it didn't happen while cranked over half way round a bend!

Just goes to show, you can 'know' how far you can go before reserve, and keep an eye on the trip, and it can still catch you out!
