Re: Fuel gauge

Brand new 06 1200 Custom finished the first 120 miles last night from full tank, the second it hit 120 miles it started to lose power. Do you guys reckon this will get better or worse, especially considering I was taking it a lot easier for the first 50 miles!

I should think it'll get much better, it did with my 883.

Wow, what are you guys doing, blowing off GSXR's?

I get 160-170miles from full to reserve on the '04 1200 custom. Best was 200 when running in, worst was 155 on a French motorway at a steady 80-85m.p.h. with a screen and panniers on.
I did manage 205 miles once before I realised the tap was still on reserve so I guess that doesn't count!
Fitting the stage 1 doesn't seem to have changed the M.P.G. much.

Sounds interesting as the guys in the dealer said that I should expect only 120-130 before hitting the reserve.

Is this on a Custom? That'd only be about 40 - 43 mpg. If it's on a Standard (R, Low, whatever) it's about 57 - 62 mpg, which seems rather high.

These guys at the dealer, have you got any reason for thinking that they know what they're talking about?

No, mine is the basic 883 without Stage1 (soon though ). The stats say that the 883 gets 48 city and 57 highway (I'm guessing at 55 mph) so with a 3.3 g tank, I should get 150 or so miles out of it.

No more so than any other dealer I guess. Though my friend has been a customer of theirs for years and has had no reason to doubt their advice.

Well if you've got a Standard, that's why the guys at the dealer are talking about 120 - 130 miles before reserve, whereas people here with Customs are talking about 160 - 170 miles. 3.9 g tank on the Custom but only 2.8 g on the Standard.

If you can get 53 out of it (I regularly get 52 - 54 out of mine) you could get to 150 miles, but it'd be bone dry by then.

D'oh!!! I was not even using my brain!!! Of course the custom has a bigger tank . . . simple really! ;)

Re: Fuel gauge

Iv'e a 2003 stage 1 sporty, I did just over 700 miles down to the Killarney rally a fortnight ago. As I'm a tight ol' fart, I keep a regular check at all fill-ups of 1:cost; 2: fuel taken on board; and 3: mileage. I averaged over the weekend's riding 70mpg, I refueled around the 100-120 mile mark and I was putting in about 6.5 to 8 litres on and average, mixed riding of (very) twisty, turny roads to slightly over the legal limit down south at 70-75 mph. Last year in France I averaged 69 mpg, so she's loosening up nicely! As can be seen I have a screen, panniers and I also had the tankbag on when traveling down and back again!

Wow, now that's what I call dedication to MPG calculation!!!

I ran the bike to it's reserve for the first time last night and it started sputtering at 115 miles. This is not bad since I was never really "cruising", it was all local roads with loads of roundabouts, not quite highway or city.
