Ground Clearance

Even on my sports bikes I was never much of a leaner, not interested in getting my knee down so I was surprised this morning to feel something hit the ground when leaning to the right on a right hand corner. I can't see anything what would have hit the ground first?

Re: Ground Clearance

exhaust on that side. have a good look underneath, you should see the scrapes.

Re: Ground Clearance

as mentioned before, usually exhaust brackets on the right and foot rests when on a hard left hander. you could consider progressives on the rear of the sporty to give it a stiffer ride and prevent grounding as frequently, but as with all ground clearance on harley's it is very poor and probably not designed for throwing round corners in a racing bike stylee.

when playing on my old heap i have experimented placing for example my left buttock on the seat in a hard right hander and leaning my body out which brings the angle of the bike more upright and obviously not counter steering as much.

just my two pennies, am sure the guru's on here will give a more definative answer

Re: Ground Clearance

how hard do you have your shocks? on my sporty i had them set on the hardest setting and never had a problem with grounding out, and i rode it pretty hard. try upping the setting if its not on full.

Cool Re: Ground Clearance

Gotta agree with Danpie,
the only thing that I've had ground was the side stand coz I'd put the return spring on the wrong pin! Other than that, no probs whatsoever!

Re: Ground Clearance

Still can't find the scratches! Maybe I imagined it! Anyone from up north? On my way out tonight on the M61 junction 4 I got caught in a thunder storm, got soaked! The bike was filthy! Two Harley riders were waiting the rain out under a bridge, was it you?

The thing about cleaning a really dirty bike is that whilst cleaning it you at least get to have a good look around it, especially when you have only just bought it!

I will be changing the springs setting tomorrow just in case I catch anything and also because the mrs is getting on the back on Wednesday!

Re: Ground Clearance

The bolts on those crappy jubilee clips that hold on the extra heat shields are usually the first thing to go down on the right hand side. I took those extra shields off anyway because they looked naff and you'll get some more clearance.
The same bolts for the 'normal' heat shields go down next if you get abit enthusiastic but you can just loosen them and turn the jubilee clip bolt inwards (and retighten 'em).
I moved all the jubilee clips when I did the stage 1 to hide the bolts and it looks alot better now.
Upping the rear shocks will help esp' two up and it seems to quicken up the steering.

Yep, it's definitely the screws on the clips for the cat heat shields that scrape first on the right; mine aren't round anymore! Worse than scraping, that heat shield (the front one) is a bit loose now, and I can't stop it rattling.

On the left I believe it's the side stand pivot that grounds first, although I haven't done this myself.

Re: Ground Clearance

Well that clears up my question as well as I also have heard and felt a grinding on a right hand bend

with the shocks on the hardest they are nowhere near enough for me and Dozer to go 2 up so we have decided its just a one person bike with standard shocks
