Fitting S&S teardrop

Run my 2002 1200S with a SE stage 1 at the moment but I like the look of the S&S "teardrop". Have "horseshoe" breather and was hoping that the S&S backing plate would fit onto this without having to make any changes. Anyone any advice/experience to offer?

Re: Fitting S&S teardrop

Hi Richard,

Custom Chrome do a kit which is an S&S Air Cleaner cover, filter element and mounting brackets. The blurb in the catalogue says that it fits Evo Big Twins or twin cams. I'm pretty sure that we fitted one to a 2003 Sporty a couple of years ago and we just had to file the holes in the support bracket out a bit. Send me a private message and I can get you a price and availability for this kit.

Re: Fitting S&S teardrop

Gday Richard,
I wanted one of those but couldn't afford it, so I made my own.
It cost about £10 all up.
I found some chicken wire on a building site.
Wrapt it around my round aircleaner cover to the shape I wanted.
Then I covered it in fibre glass.
I let that set and then sanded it so it was a bit smoother, not too fussy.
Then I filled the whole thing with P38.
Then I sanded that untill it was as smooth as a baby's bum.
To attach it to the existing cover I fixed strong velcro strips.
It's been on my bike for 6 years and never come off.
Not everyones cup of tea to be hands on but I get a buzz from it.
You can see a photo of it at http://www.bikernet.com/bikebarn.Pag...sp?PageID=1304
Thats my 2cents worth.
Cheers
Tibbs

Re: Fitting S&S teardrop

Hi
Saved up and bought a unit in from states, Sorgys were very helpful and quick with delivery (no affiliation or backhanders).

Great quality item with a comprehensive fitting kit and instructions. S&S helpful and polite in response to daft question from me.
No mods needed to fit to my 2002 1200S, though I sprayed the back plate in wrinkle black to tie in with the carb top etc.

Kept the SE hoseshoe breather 'cos it works. Used the spacer from the SE unit and shims from the S&S kit to get it snug.

Very pleased with the looks and the neat fitting. Starts and runs great. Just waiting for salt etc to go and then will get a proper blast. Maybe I'll get to a Dyno this year.
Cheers

Re: Fitting S&S teardrop

Hi Tibbs

I was tempted but don't think my sanding skills are up to it and my experiences with gluing or stitching on velcro meant it would be down the road after a couple of miles.

Cheers
Richard1200

PS
Hope I've got enough loctite on this one.
R

Re: Fitting S&S teardrop

You said a lot of sanding went into the cover, I meant how did you sandpaper that nude onto the cover, excellent work.
