Endorsable offence?

I have Vance and Hines slip on mufflers fitted to my XL1200R, they have the quiet baffles fitted, but a few people have commented that they are too noisey. I know they are technically illegal but if I were to be pulled by the cops, is it a £30 non endorsable ticket, or a £60 endorsable? I drive for a living and already have a few points and don't need anymore. I am aware of the option of the vehicle defect rectification scheme, but I need to know if it ultimately carries points.

I've only been pulled once for loud pipes, but that was back in 1999 on my FXDX superglide sport with SE pipes. Just got a friendly bollocking by the bike cop.

Re: Endorsable offence?

It depends on how you ride the bike, if you act like a cnut/ferker (delete as appropriate) you will be pulled by plod. Ride sensibly & you may have no probs . They could pull you for variety of things & if they do , smile nicely with your "yes sirs, no sirs" act and you could get away with it.

Re: Endorsable offence?

I've got straight thro' pattern mufflers on. Never had a problem with plod even when one stopped to see if he could help when the bike broke down. I always keep the revs down when they are around and so far so good. Don't know about points though.

Re: Endorsable offence?

Used that link and came across this document from Devon Constabulary (it is from 2004). Look at page 13 and if Mr Policeman was going by the book there'd not be many bikes on the road.

http://www.devon-cornwall.police.uk/...e=CJU_D046.pdf

Exhaust (and others) is a fixed penalty but not listed as an endorsement. Up here on the A65 there are weekends where a whole unit spends the day stopping every thing from lights to pipes.

Re: Endorsable offence?

You might want to read the thread in Virtual Rally. The following is taken from the guidelines:

ACPO - Motorcycle Enforcement Strategy For England, Wales & Northern Ireland

Illegal exhausts, in cases with no noise annoyance, consider the use of the Vehicle Defect Rectification Scheme and appropriate advice.

Where noise annoyance is a factor, prosecution is recommended, with consideration to be given to the use of Section 59 Police Reform Act 2002 for persistent offenders or excessive noise nuisance.

This issue affects the wider public and in many cases serves to alienate them from motorcyclists in general by reinforcing stereotypes. The Police have a duty to protect all road users and communities, it is therefore necessary to take proactive action against the illegal use of exhausts on motorcycles.

I'm with 1sportyrich on this one, its a risk but...... it might never happen. Having said that I'm looking for a change of pipes, for personal comfort on longer trips.
