Did you try putting some oil on it?

Yeah, I have just spent 30 minutes trying it when covered with oil. It must be me, after all, it came of so it must go on again!

Gonna take it to HD Preston tomorrow and let them put it on. If they know how.

They are a bloody nuisance to get out, and even worse to get in, took me about five attempts to get the hang of it.

Still fiddly but preferable to having the oil filler bumping the inside of your leg all the time as the earlier Sporties did.

Re: And the silliest question of the year award goes to...

Just got my 04 883 and as I predicted it's pissing down so with Jim Cowpe in the garage I decided to check the oil. Can't get the oil cap to fit flush. Niether could Jim. Eventually tried it without the O ring. Fitted perfectly with ease. I feel this is where the problem lies. Tried a new oil ring from some in the garage. More difficult to fit but easier than with the original O ring. Any thoughts or observations please?.

For me the solution was to fit the temp gauge dipstick. Pricy for an oil tank cap, but I think it's worth it. This one doesn't pop up, it's got a raised bit that's much easier to grip. It's metal too, not plastic. There were some problems with some of the early ones (made in Taiwan I think), but the later ones are made in Germany and are fine. Here it is:

It's worth doing a search on ebay. I had the same trouble and found a temp gauge one there about 3 months ago. Guy puts them on listed as an auction item. I missed one for £24, but only paid £30 for mine. They look really good - my 883 runs about 150F when hot

Common issue. Used to use a rubber glove to get good grip. Awful design.

I'm with Folkie on this one. I have fitted a temperature gauge and no more issues.

Re: And the silliest question of the year award goes to...

Its in the wrist action!! When I got my Sporty 1200 I casually took out said
filler cap and then spent a frantic half an hour trying to get it back in thinking i'd bust it!! As said above it can only go in on way so align the lugs first (one thick, one thin) then push down and twist clockwise fairly firmly at the same time. Mine took a good five attempts to start to ease up a bit,but dosn't give me any grief now. You do feel such a Tw*t when your image of yourself as
a hard biker is shattered by having difficulty putting your own oil cap back on!!

Ohhh the shame!!!!!

Did you try coating the o ring with oil? That sometimes helps.
