K & N Air filter

hi all
new to the forums and new to harleys, just managed to get myself a 2003 1200c sportser. i want to do a stage 1 on it and have got some cycle shack slash cuts on order aswell as a jet kit.just wondered if a k & n filter insert will let the engine breathe enough or do i need a SE a/c kit.

cheers

The K&N filter will help the engine breathe easier but you should also drill vent holes in the backing plate (OUTSIDE of the air filter element). If you're not sure what I mean find someone who has had a "Stage 1" completed "free" by their dealer. You will see a series of holes drilled through the plastic backing plate instead of fitting a SE air cleaner kit.

Re: K & N Air filter

Hi mate

I fitted a K & N filter plus earlier longer breather bolts to my 2001 Sportster filter set up and had had no probs since.

Try PM’ing ‘Folkie’, if I remember, he got a pretty decent set up from the US and got a good price.

Give him a try, he’s a good ‘un.

Cheers

Re: K & N Air filter

The filter you need is this....HD-1396

Cross ref number for 29261-95 is HD-1396

See this link
AMERICAN K&N APPLICATION LIST

I take it you bought this....HD-1388

Which if you want to fit it you need a filter set up like this....

Re: K & N Air filter

You could try pm'ing Borg.
He's just sold his Sportster chop and I think he had recently fitted a Hypercharger.
So he may still have the one shown.

You will need the 2 earlier breather bolts, the 2 long spacers (which go in-between the air filter back plate and the cylinder head), 2 short spacers and 2 locking washers (which go in-between the bolt head and the air filter plate, shown at the top of the filter plate)
Also the 2 threaded 'air cleaner cover' mounting 'spacers (bottom of picture, which pass trough the filter and allow you screw the cover to) with the two bolts and lock washers which hold these 'spacers', plus the plate of course.

Cheers

DD
