Finally braved polishing the fork lowers

Like most HD front forks mine were starting to corrode under the lacquer. I was going to try to polish a second hand set first but today had a go. It is quite easy actually and no need to remove the forks.

Brake caliper, Wheel and mudguard taken off so forks could rotate. Polishing mop on a drill with a coarse soap to remove lacquer and metal polish and mop to finish off. Took around 2 hours and a very black face

Re: Finally braved polishing the fork lowers

Nice job HOG!

When my lowers corroded under the lacquer (very slightly), the dealer replaced them under warranty, with chrome ones! Which is nice too, but doesn't give me the satisfaction of having done it myself.

Re: Finally braved polishing the fork lowers

I think they all do it. Mine is 4 years old and out of warranty unfortunately. Had a look this morning in the sun and they need a little more fine polishing. Luckily I am at work so can get some free polishing blocks.

Re: Finally braved polishing the fork lowers

Do you actually do any work there, or do you spend all your time finding stuff for the bike?

Not bad matey,
but now comes the hard part!!! keeping them highly
polished, use Belgom Alu,to clean and Jofs bike wax or AutoGlym Resin
to protect, personally I hate polishing Alloy, had enough with my XS 650.

It's better than watching your chrome flake and peel, though, isn't it?

Cheers
