Ignition Problem

Hi All,
Iv now got after 2 years of trouble free running an intermittent ignition problem on the 88 sportster. Sometimes it starts then after a few minutes it dies with no spark at both plugs ! Iv checked the HT lead connections and all wire connecters including the kill switch which i thought was the problem. Iv done all the resistance checks on the coil, Ig module & timing sensor but all seem ok or am i missing something as im not the best with electrics. Iv borrowed an Ignition timing sensor as mine was old & the wires looked cracked but it hasnt made any difference. Im now looking for an electrical mechanic to sort it for me & pay the price ! Anyone got any solutions or know a good 'cheap' wizard with electrics ?

Re: Ignition Problem

This sounds like a crank position sensor problem to me!!

Re: Ignition Problem

That`ll be an 88 then.
If all the connections are good, it may well be the module.

Re: Ignition Problem

1988 equals no crank sensor crap

fire it up and blast a hairdryer at the module.....and at the coil.

See if one or t'other breaks down with heat

Re: Ignition Problem

I have had the same problem with a customers bike, some times it would start on the button other times it would just wind over and do nothing or just back fire. Go back to it ten minutes latter it would start up ok.Did all the checks came out ok,it was doing my head in.In the end I bought a new module to just try it if it worked the customer would pay for it if it did not i would have a spare to try next time, it ran o.k and has not been a problem since.

Same here, mine would start, run ok even go for a ride. Stop the engine and ......nothing, two minutes later started like a beauty.
Did all the tests that was recommneded in the manual, all ok........grrrr
After faffing around with plugs, leads, coil i just changed the module.
No probs then at all, started and ran all the time.
