Insurance for 1200 conversion

Hi

I'm having my 883R converted to 1200 (can't wait to get it back) ...

I did the honest thing and told my broker about it only to find that my current insurance company declined to take it on and would cancel me policy. They would of course cover me for a stock 1200 but no amount of logic would persuade them to accept an 883 conversion !!

The brokers (Swinton) were pretty good at finding me someone else who would cover it and at the end of the day I'm not too badly out of pocket. But I still can't see where the first insurer was coming from .

Has anyone else experienced similar ?

Chris H

Re: Insurance for 1200 conversion

I was with Carol Nash and they were ok about it. There was no difference in the premium either for some reason

With Esure now and they are even better

Re: Insurance for 1200 conversion

When I first got my 883 I'd only just passed my test on a 125 so had to get it restricted to 33 bhp. I forgot to tell the insurer about this initially, then when I did tell them they upped the premium, because the engine was modified!

Re: Insurance for 1200 conversion

Carol Nash were OK when I changed from 883 to 1200.
I used to work in Insurance industry and you tend to get quite young inexperienced staff, who would know nothing about bikes and probably have no interest in them any way. The insurer I used to work for really did not make any money out of bike insurance and generally the underwriting loss was subsidised by the investment income of the premiums, however when this dropped off they stopped insuring bikes. The real problem was the ever present risk of a huge passenger liability claim against the rider. I was an Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute but no longer hold this title as I resigned from the institute when I left the insurance industry. If people have problems with insurance companies etc I dont mind if they contact me for help, I can usually quickly draft letters etc and offer advice. I would not charge for this either for fellow riders. Hope this helps

Re: Insurance for 1200 conversion

I'm with Harley Davidson Insurance Services on an agreed value insurance, and I've spoken to them recently about the conversion I'm about to do.
They are going to increase the premium which I consider very reasonable anyway by 10% if I go to 1550cc. They aren't interested about the cams and heads that I'm fitting...just the increase in cc.

Brian.
