Bigger fuel tank

Im fed up of filling up my 2.1 gal tank every 80 miles now, especially as petrol stations are getting fewer & far between. It seems once iv been out & covered only 50 miles im thinking petrol station/petrol station....Iv nearly run out a few times now & when i do find a station the b****y pumps either havnt got any unleaded or there shut !
What is the biggest tank that will fit my 1989 1200 sportster ? Im looking to get at least 120 miles or so from a tank if poss !

Re: Bigger fuel tank

Anything is possible with a bit of fabrication. How many gallons did you want ? Or you could fill up your saddle bags

Re: Bigger fuel tank

Yeah but looking cool or looking for petrol stations id sub cool for bigger tank right now (about 4-5 gallons ) my T140 tank lasts about 200 + miles.
It stops me from enjoying the ride to the point im allways thinking have i enough fuel to last 90 mins of riding I find im not planning where to go rather than linking up petrol stations ! I reckon that there is 30% less fuel stations around now than 10 years ago. I can think of 8 stations that have shut in my local area alone Maybe i should tow a tanker

Re: Bigger fuel tank

Not many bikes will do 200 miles to the tank.

130 must be around average. I get 110 out of my 883 until reserve on the peanut tank.

My bandit around 150, Speed triple around 120 and My Z I am not sure.

Good luck finding a 5 gallon sportster tank that fits the bill.

Re: Bigger fuel tank

Good luck with your search. Real riding in my view needs a range of at least 200 miles without worry. 250 would be a real bonus. Worst feature of my 04Heritage is the under-sized tank. If anyone knows of a bigger tank for that let me know please. I note that the 08 tourers have a bigger tank; though I am not cetain if it would fit.

240 to 250 mls per fill on my 6 gallon flatslides,- they can easily be made to fit Sportys you can even buy fixing kits that just need wielding into position.- but would look stupid on a Sporty IMHO.

Just do a search on Google there's stacks of 3 1/2 gallon plus tanks for sale, for example:- J&P Cycles - Motorcycle exhausts, seats, mirrors, and more or search the same shop for "King Tank" over 4 gallons,- looks standard thats cool.
