Loud pipes

Hello

what would you say is the loudest pipes you can put on a sporty. I am currently using thunderheaders.

Re: Loud pipes

why do you not like your neighbours , Baffless short shots on a rubber mounted sporty is going to be deafening but run like crap
drag pipes are loud and any 2-2 pipe is going to louder than a 2-1 thunderheader, but the thunderheader is going to make the bike run really well

Re: Loud pipes

the short shots are on the limit of reversion ie sucking cold air back into the pipes and removing the baffle will only make matter worse.
Baffles are not there just to quieten pipes down they are there to provide back pressure to the engine.
No baffles ie drag pipes will lose more or less all of the bottom end torque of the motor until it is up and spinning and being ridden flat out hence the term drag pipes as drag bikes are ridden flat out.
the baffle provides back pressure and generates the torque into the rpm range.
ie - not HD but just the same.
Stock Yam Vstar1100 hp rwhp 50-55max torque 45-50ft lbs max
Yam Vstar 1100 with Sampson Ripsaw pipes, these are true drags supplied with no baffles and no provision for baffles.
with my 420 street cams installed, dyna 3000, hot shots, torque cones, it produced 72hp at 6800rpm and 55ft/lbs from 4000 to 5500rpm - 5 ftlbs more than stock and to use it i had to be screaming the motor, and it was uncomfortable to ride any distance even with ear plugs, these are the only pipes that ever got me a tug from the Law they could be heard 3miles away at full chat.
after the tug i replaced the pipes with - a cobra 2-1 power pro after all the tuners advised this would greatly help the motor.
I installed the pipe, this has the biggest true baffle i have ever seen and a lot of people were drilling out the baffles back plate i left mine well alone.
it then produced 75rwhp i know not much more than the drags and at the same rpms but this is the big but 70+ft/lbs of torque all the way from 2500 up to 6000 were it started to drop off meaning the bike was more tractable and a better bike to ride as the torque was not like a 2stroke power band and to boot the pipe was way quieter, so much so i thought i had put the stock system back on

Re: Loud pipes

Have to ask...what are you aiming at? Lots of noise or decent performance?

Very Interesting. I recently fitted some V&H Sideshots (with quiet baffles) to my Sportster and did notice a bit of a drop in bottom end torque. Must say the mid-range power has mage up for it. Although to be honest I bought these pipes for their looks and sound and not performance changes.

which is what most people buy a set of pipes for most do not think of the out right performance issue.
Me i know look for a pipe that will give me the best performance and compliment the rest of the works done to the motor which usually means a 2-1 exhaust

Re: Loud pipes

People "like you" who think louder is better only ruins it for others, it’s the same as very small number plates!!

Yes we all like our Harleys to look and sound good, my bike for instance has Screamin Eagle pipes, they sound fantastic, but I can control how loud I want it to be, if I open the throttle it’ll bark!! take it easy through villages and nobody notices,

Making them uncontrollably loud will only result in the police being bombarded with complaints which will result in them clamping down on everyone who has aftermarket exhausts weather loud or not!!

That’s not fair on fellow bikers,

Do you care?

Tom just read thru your previous posts i see you have a 90inch motor in your sportster, with all the work done on that engine i would not change the pipe from the thunder header at most i would possibly put RB racing LSR blackhole on it as i think they look better than the Thunderheader.
changing from a good 2-1 is going to kill the motors performance
