Unhappy strange speedo possible fault

got an 05 883L. riding along and suddenly trip metre goes blank, speedo sticks at whatever speed i was doing and little red key symbol light partially lights up. bike is otherwise riding fine, happens on and off, it will return to normal during a ride and even return to correct mileage, its got me puzzled. just worried that it might be a sign of further electrical problems, anybody got any ideas. cheers steve.

Re: strange speedo possible fault

My first action would be to remove all the fuses (behind the nearside panel that pulls out from the top then lifts off the bottom tab) and clean the contacts then apply a little electrolytic grease before refitting them not forgetting the main fuse below the others.

Hope it's that simple.

Check the power lead off your battery to the starter as it might be on the way out and the earth lead too while you're at it.

nah, tried cleaning the fuses, and my cables look ok, still a dead speedo.
get a nuetral and oil light when i switch it on but nothing in the trip meter window, turn bike off and indicators blink but now no flashing red key light.
any thoughts, steve.

Re: strange speedo possible fault

no alarm only factory immobaliser, present state of affairs is this.
nothing on speedo when turned off, double click key fob, indicators flash once and still no lights on speedo,
turn key to ignition, neutral and oil light come on and red key light comes on for approx 4 secs then goes off for 3 to 4 secs then on for approx 5 secs then stays off.
if i switck ignition key back to accessory position red key stays on constant.
remove key and after 30 secs indicators flash twice as normal but no flashing red key light on speedo.
steve.

Check in your owners manual, hopefully it should tell you how to get the fault code/s that are stored in your speedo. There is a list of codes in the manual and somewhere on this site.

If it is electrical check everything including the reg/rec. Had one of those go on me on the M6.

Re: strange speedo possible fault

I had similar problems on my 05 Sporty.

Checked all connections all OK

When I cleared the diagnostic codes, all went OK.

When you switch on and the engine light goes out but comes back on again for a short time, means you have something amiss and the codes have been saved.

go to http://www.harley-davidson-hangout.c...ult-codes.html

There are others on the site as well as these, but these will let you know how to look for the codes. Don't think these are totally applicable to sportsters.
