Stage one

Hi, I know nothing about Sportsters,...I've never ridden one, so I need some info please. A friend of mine has just bought an 08 1200 Custom. It sounds something similar to a Lambretta, and goes about the same. I asked him if he was getting a stage 1 done to it, and he said out local dealer wants a fortune to do it...so it'll have to wait.

What's involved in doing this...is it just silencers and air cleaner. Will it invalidate the warrenty if I do it for him.

Any advice appreciated...I did do a search on here, but didn't really find the answers.

Brian.

Re: Stage one

you will need
1. The air cleaner of you choice - Scream eagle/SE heavy breather/Arlen Ness or similar they do not yet do the Hypercharger for 08's i like the SE as it works and the new ones suffer less issues than previous incarnations.
2. your choice of exhaust be it slipons or full system many out there how loud do you want to go.
3. A fuel computer of your choice. - V&H fuel Pak about £180, PCIII £280 nice and programmable and works great with a dyno tune.
It WILL NOT VOID THE WARRANTY if they say it does mention the OFT warranty clause and the fact they have to prove that what you have done has caused the problem/warranty claim - repeat THEY HAVE TO PROVE IT

Re: Stage one

Would recommend a Power Commander very strongly over a Fuel Pack

Re: Stage one

You could just do the mufflers which would be cheaper. My understanding is that this change doesn't require any other modification to the FI bikes. Or even cheaper you could just drill a hole in the baffle plug within the mufflers. This produces a slightly louder sound than stock, but not as loud as after market pipes.

The bike itself will run loads better after it's been carefully run in. Mine (stock 2006 883r with a hole in the baffle plugs) felt like a completely different bike after about the first 850 miles and just keeps getting better. Some say it takes several thousand miles to completely run these engines in.

Re: Stage one

the FI only adjusts when the 02 sensors are working and they are narrow band so only work at certain rpms and not were you want them to .
unlike the Buell FI which i thing HD should fit to all bikes were it learns and runs in open and closed circuit FI

In theory that's quite right if all you want is a bit more noise. In practice, the Harleys are set up to run very lean. So even if you don't change the air filter, they will still be a little lumpy and hot round town and less "zestful" when scratching around the back lanes. Stil, if mopney is tight, this means you can always "stage it in stages".

Cheers

Mike

Re: Stage one

I would get a pair of mufflers I have some for sale, similar to the ones I used for my stage 1. Still in the box.

Hi Mike B,

This is what most believe to be the case and I'm sure you are correct that the later bikes are set up on the lean side, although my understanding is that this is only at tickover. I haven't found this to be a big issue if an issue at all. My bike doesn't run hot nor does it show any other signs of running lean. It sounds just about right (after the mod) and it's well quick enough for me.

Cheers,

Colin....
