I may be nearly 60 but enjoy keeping off the main roads and spend most of the time on "B" roads like Bardney bends and the Lincolnshire Wolds.

It would probably do high 40s on a steady run at 70 or so. This bike is purely for pleasure, not for commuting.
i think i said once before that our bikes are very similar, mines an 883/1200 conversion with stage 1, se II slashcut pipes and se filter (and oddly about the same age - us not the bikes mines 2004!!) AND im inclined to ride mostly around of the b roads of nw kent enjoying the sun so the same type of driving (i guess) yet im getting about 55/58mpg and when i get on the m25 i dont hang about.
have you checked the jet sizes of the pilot and main cos some dealers fit 180 or even 190 main and push the pilot up to 45 or so when they carry out work/fit items like the Stage 1, Kuryakyn Hypercharger and Screamin' Eagle 2s?. have you done a plug chop - what colour are they?. how many turns out is the pilot screw? (i doubt this would make much difference as i origionally had mine set wrongly at 5 turns out and now its right its only made 3 mpg difference)
whichever way you look at it your getting prity poor consumption unless your really giving it some stick around those lanes of yours.

Well in my opinion there is something not right there, you should be getting mid 40's mpg at least.
And at 70mph on the motorway you should be getting an easy 50+
My 1550 softail with loads of work on the motor heads, cams, carb, pipes and ignition is giving me what your getting outa that Sporty and thats at worst (32mpg) on a trip its giving me 50+mpg and i give it plenty of stick.
My XR1200 is giving me 45+, again ridden hard.
Only things i can think of are you aint got it jetted anywhere near right, and if so you should be able to smell it running rich, or you aint getting it outa 3rd gear.

Re: sporty mpg

Hi Folks,

Just for comparison with another bike - mine is a 2004 Carb 1200R with Stage 1 and SEII.

Average MPG on a run is 65 and this drops to the low 50s if I push it.

Re: sporty mpg

I have to recheck mine all again as I have just changed my trikeup to a 1200 from 883. Definately a difference around town, the torque is amazing and all I need is a whiff of throttle, need to run in the new pots a bit. Next job is to change the original rear brake pipe to goodridge hose to take out any rubber hose, to tighten up the rear brakes.
