You can polish anything; it'll just take a lot more work if it's rough cast to get it smooth and shiny.

Re: 2001 grey cases

I reckon it is paint. Some came off my 05 Sportster. Similar to the black finish but grey. I don't think it is as durable. The 80's bikes were rough cast alloy and could be polished more easily. I would be interested to hear more on this.

Re: 2001 grey cases

it is powder coated as some of it has come off mine (harley do a touch up paint) and if you look at
Browser Update Required look up sportster 883c and key features the harley details state "silver powder-coated"

Re: 2001 grey cases

Anything can be polished up. I have been asked this question many times but never attempted a set.

I advise would be uneconomical. Better to buy chrome covers.

You would have to spend hours getting a mirror finish as the rough finish would have to be removed first.

If you don't want a mirror finish it should not be too bad a job.

Scotchbright wheel or wire wheel followed by the normal mop and soap method.
