If its the same as the later ones.
Press the button on the back to cycle thru 2 trip settings (A & B) and the total miles. The ignition must be on for this as it defaults to total miles when ignition off. Also I think you will find it will cycle between miles & kilometres if you press and hold for a few seconds.

Re: help needed. speedo probs

hmm.... the problems stiil there peep,s
this morning she started ok, but after 3 miles she started to pop, bang, cut out, restart, big backfire, then no throttle response, cut-out again, more back-firing, and "stuttering" then she,s ok. (repeat several times...)

also the speedo now only reads up to 15mph.

( i,m slowly going out of my mind...... )

Re: help needed. speedo probs

Could be dodgy battery connections, I had a problem some time ago, speedo drops to zero, then missfires, then cut outs. The thread on the positive battery terminal was knackered, drilled it out and tapped it M8 new bolt and it works just fine now.
Cheers

Re: help needed. speedo probs

dont recall you mentioning the other problems before, just the 'odd' spedo problem. what came first or was it all at once??.
seems strange it works at first when all is cold but plays up when hot - but check things like the earth as suggested.
have you checked the fault codes (assuming the '96 has the same type of system as my '04) ??
