Question How to check oil level

This may sound like a stupid question.......but after a couple of different opinions on how to check the oil I thought it would be interesting to hear other peoples views.

My dipstick simply has two marks on it, one near the bottom and one just over half way up. My manual clearly states that you should check it on the SIDE STAND. This I can sort of understand due to the angle that the dipstick sits in the oil tank. However, it is not clear on just where abouts the level should be on the dip stick, I can only assume that it should be somewhere between the two marks??

Any advice on this would be appreciated.

Re: How to check oil level

Hi Steve,

The bottom mark is the 'oh my god' one, from which it is wise to top up to the higher 'phew' mark, at which everything should be just fine!

Personally I check to ensure when hot the level is not above the top line and when topping up do so to just below it.

You will get some different answers on this.
The later Sportsters tent to throw oil thru the breather in the carb if too full (up to the full mark).
I and quite a few others are happy to check hot on the sidestand with the level midway between the upper and lower marks. It always seems to go down to halfway on the stick very quickly then settle out there.

Warm or hot.
The reason for this is if the bike has been standing for a while the oil can drain down into the engine giving a false reading so it should always be checked after running long enough to return oil to the tank.

Re: How to check oil level

as has been mentioned it should be checked when hot and on the side stand if it has an oil tank with a (shall we say) offset cap like the later oil tanks have as ithe dip stick is then vertical..ish. tanks with a central cap need to be held upright to check the level.

Re: How to check oil level

That's an interesting point; my 2003 sporty is now a trike, so I can only check it on the level, I wonder what that would read? I normally check that the oil is flowing ok after start-up now.

That wouldn't be much use if I lived in Lincoln or Norfolk!
