As above - it can be done but risks the belt snapping in extreme cases. If you do need to do it suggest in high gear down a hill.

Never ever ever ever ever (can I stop now?) jump start a Harley from a car - your risk blowing a couple of hundred quids worth of electronic stuff.

Optimate good idea - and cheaper than a replacement battery.

I have heard this before and never has it been explained. You are only connecting a battery to supplement the flat one after all. It doesn't seem any different to say, changing a battery and we've all done it loads of times with cars, so why is a H-D any different?

Bump started em loads of times with no problems. (second gear with two peep pushing)

And jump started em loads of times with no problem. Harley handbook even tells you how to do it
like i say i've done it loads of times.

Yes - I've always thought these were urban myths. Like mobile phones causing petrol stations to explode.

Has anyone actually caused damage by bump starting/jump leading/using their mobile near petrol?

Re: Bump Starts with flat battery

Hi,
Two guys on the TV tested mobiles and Petrol stations. They tried everything they could think of, and got as far as putting a mobile in a tank of petrol vapour and even then the only way they could get it to burn was to short the battery out and cause a spark. In normal use a mobile will not cause petrol to ignite, but I do remember some years ago it was possible to slow down the counters on a pump using a CB radio with a large amplifier. 27Mhz and 100 watts. Even that didn't cause explosions, and it is far more likely to than a small mobile phone.
Cheers
;-)

PS TV show called Mythbusters, those guys are crazy.

That's it then - they're afraid the phones will slow the counters!

Well said, though i'm sure someone will come up with something...........I can even hazard a guess as to who its gonna be!

Just look at it like this, your belt and pulleys are gonna last for best part of 100,000 miles if you are lucky. And if you had chain and sprockets you would be lucky to get 6,000 miles out of em.
So given the above info, why the fcuk should you be worried about bump starting your bike.
These belts have five or six strands of carbon fiber (each one is capable of supporting the bikes weight) running through em and the rest is Kevlar, chances of breaking that lot are very slim indeed.
