K&N Filter purchased......Don't fit..?

Hi Guy's
Just bought a supposedly direct replacement K&N filter for my 1200 Sportster Sport.
Got it off e-bay, it clearly shows it should fit my year and model. The part No. is HD-1388
It sort of looks like the right fit around the carb but there is no way you can screw the filter to the carb and there is no way you can then screw on your cover as again there is no threaded inserts to take the screws.
My standard filter has 3 holes for the fitment to the carb and two threaded inserts for the cover to be attached.

Anyone else had this problem with a K&N filter and can anyone help with the correct part No. I need.

Thanks.

Steve.

Re: K&N Filter purchased......Don't fit..?

Hi Scotty, I have just checked the KN site as well and it is that exact filter, my bike is a year 2000 sport. Just wondering if I should have received some kind of bracket with it as there is no way of securing it to the carb and no way of screwing the outer cover back on.

One way it might work is if I was to somehow split my old filter and use it as a mounting plate...! But surely the KN should come with any mounting brackets if needed.

No problem Scotty, hopefully someone else who has a sport might throw some light on it.

It was a while back I fitted mine, but I can remember I had to remove the plate from the back of the stock filter and put on the K&N

I think that is the only way to do it....just seems pretty piss poor that you have to dismantle your original filter to hopefully use it as a bracket, especially when they state it is a direct replacement...!

I think you may have been stitched mate.... My came with a replacement backplate to which the filter screws into.... It still requires a thicker gasket to enable a tight fit to stop the locating screws pulling back the aluminium backplate..
