Re: Sportster rear end

Nice one Brigger, this answers a thread I started a few days ago about a fat look rear end.
It's an American company, so that means the kit has to be imported from the states. The thing you have to bear in mind, is that the cost can escalate once you start to add on import duty, UK vat, and carriage handling when it gets over hear. And in the price range of $1500 you could probably double that by the time it's delivered to your door.
I reckon there must be a an EU supplier who can produce the same thing which would considerably reduce the cost.

I import all my bits from the states... so I work on the basis of 8% duty - 15%VAT and roughly £15.00 customs clearance.

When I imported my front wheel the freight was $80.00. What you have to realise is that UK dealers (not only HD) do a straight conversion.

So if its $1400.00 it will be £1400.00 stg

Just do a comparison with UK HD dealers and USA... you will be shocked.

I have just purchased (Thanks to Rod for slagging off my numberplate) a laydown number plate kit with built in indicator relocator kit for $79.00
(£53.00) and I will get on Monday guaranteed delivery, if I had purchased from the UK it would had been not in stock, pay up front, given a delivery time of approx 2 weeks (comes from Germany) and then have to collect..

If there was realistic pricing in the UK I would buy here... But there aint...

75% of it is very easy, speak to someone like Metmachex first, they make custom swingarms, tell them what you want and they will make it for you. Buy a offset front pulley, they are less than £100 from Zodiac, buy a wheel and tyre, buy a wheel spacer blank (Custom chrome) basiacally a length of stainless tube for wheel spacers and make your own, or measure them and then get your local machine shop to cut them to size. The only thing then to sort out is your rear guard, again zodiac and Custom Chrome sell larger ones, just a matter of picking something you like and making it fit. Depending on the size of tyre you go for you may have to alter your frame horns (the bits that hold your rear guard on) the bigger the tyre the more modification.

You could also talk to a professional frame builder about getting a stock swingarm made wider, which wouldnt cost much or even buy a spare swingarm from ebay and experiment. I have a stock swing arm in my shed thats going spare if any one wants one.

Both JMC and Metamachex can do a swingarm for around £600 for in my case the Dyna that included the stainless spindle. A custom firm offered to widen a stock one for £450 + a further £200 for a spindle. Im a turner so spacers are'nt a problem. Devon rims quoted up to£1000 for all stainless 18 x 8 rim although over the counter are around £400 but some say quality is an issue.
Big expense is primary spacer kit and work involved in fitting, but again suggestions of running wheel 10mm offset woks, but doesnt appeal to me All in all I could be looking at £4000 if done to the best routes
