What happens on a 2500 sevice?

I'm 500 miles or a week away from the bikes first service and was wondering what exactly is done on the 2500 service. I have a slight noise that sounds like the valve train ticking at cruise. A bit like a solid cam in a V8. Being my first Harley this may just be natural and I don't mind asking but don't want to raise a concern over nothing. It's not loud but I didn't expect to hear anything after 2000 miles.

They get quieter as they go on; a combination of you getting used to the noise and the engine bedding in. Many old-school riders don't consider a Harley to be fully run in till its got 20 thousand on the clock.

Thanks Kev. It's not a major concern but if it was the start of something I'd rather address it now than later. If the cam has solid lifters then it's probably nothing more than that seeing as I'm sitting on top of the engine rather than three foot behind it as in my Chevy.

The first service on Sportsters used to be at 1000 miles then at 5000 then every 5000 after that. Was on my 2005 1200c anyway. What year is yours.

There is a Maintenance Schedule in your handbook that gives all that is carried out at all services.

Try and have a listen more on the side of the primary chain, I've heard sporty primary chains rattle a couple of times on low millage bikes, if so check the chain tension or get them to make sure they do when you take it in.

The bike is a '57 plate 1200. I'll check in the book. Thanks for te primary chain heads up. I'm sure it's nothing to worry about.

Then no service until 5000 miles. The book tells you what they change and check. Had my Dyna done at the squealers and it was only £163 - near fell over! Suspect the sportster is cheaper as theres one less oil to change.

I think it will have have hydraulic lifters and non-adjustable pushrods. More Buick / Rover V8 than Chevy.
