Saddlebags for 1993 1200 XLH.

I've searched but I'm still confused and would appreciate some help!
My Sportster has saddle supports fitted which were on it when I bought it a few weeks ago. The part no. from an old invoice is 9079986C. Which saddlebags would fit these? I see that the indicators have to be relocated, how could I tell if this has been done? From where to where?
This is my first Harley and I couldn't be more pleased, great fun!
Thanks in advance.
Rob.

Re: Saddlebags for 1993 1200 XLH.

I've just moved the indicators back on my 2005 883 to allow saddlebags to fit. It's not difficult. The first one took me about an hour trying to fathom out how to do it, the second one about ten minutes.

There was a photocopied copy of instructions from the H-D service manual which totally confused me. Taking apart and looking at the bits did the trick.

It's a real pain to have to go to all that trouble and expense to get less than 2" more space. If I were cynical I might even think it's just another way of getting us to part with pricey aftermarket bits.

Re: Saddlebags for 1993 1200 XLH.

Thanks for your thoughts Poplargreg. Those nice folks at Jersey Harley have confirmed that the saddlebag supports I have are for the small throw-over type. I'm guessing that the indicators won't have to be moved as the owner who fitted them hasn't moved them. Unfortunately the invoice for the saddlebags doesn't show a part number (bought from Alvin's in 1995) so still not sure which saddlebags they are. If anybody knows I'd be grateful.
Being new to Harley's and pretty ignorant (in more ways than one!) how do saddlebags attach to the supports. Can't seem to find and pics or diagrams anywhere.

Hi

a pic of your saddlebag supports wouldn't hurt. but, i have some on my bike which look pretty standard and have bought these bags: V-Twin Mania - Genuine Harley Davidson parts and accessories, Kuryakyn, Vance & Hines, Custom Chrome, Zodiac and many more...

yet to use them in anger, but they look and feel pretty good, as i have to move the indicators. have bought the kit but not done the job as the HD instructons look orrible and it seems to involve taking off the shockers etc. I'm a mechanical dumbo so i'm leaving it till the service next month and get Phil at fatboyz to do it.

I'll get the bike back on 7 July and will take a photo if you like.

Re: Saddlebags for 1993 1200 XLH.

It was the H-D instructions that came with the kit that made me delay moving the indicators and fitting the bags. When I came to do it I attempted to follow them but ended up just using the diagrams as they are pretty incomprehensible.

You only have to loosen the upper bolts on the shocks to allow the chrome cover to be removed. The whole job can be done with the bike on the sidestand.

If saddlebag supports are fitted, they are usually retained by the top shocker bolt at one end. Be wary if you buy these s-hand on ebay, as longer fitting bolts are needed (got mine from Jersey). Fitting these mean you have to remove said bolts. Only do one side at a time so the poor thing does not sink to its knees.

Make sure that you have the correct tools though, as frustration, grazed knuckles and damaged fittings will surely result!

Thanks again Poplargreg. I've posted pics on the members gallery under 'saddlebag supports '93 XLH 1200'.
Sorry I don't know how to post them here!

jonco - had a look at the photo.

i'm no expert as i'm fairly new to this stuff myself but from your photo your indicators look like they are fairly well back towards the ass end of the bike and should give you some room for a decent saddlebag. as far as i am aware the supports are there to keep the bag from being sucked into the rear wheel so i can't see there is much to stop you getting some decent sized bags if you wanted - but i'm sure there are more qualified opinions on here than me.

Re: Saddlebags for 1993 1200 XLH.

I have a pair of genuine HD saddlebags almost new conditon which fit inbetween the rear indicators and rear shock.

The bags tie on by leather ties and rings on the back of the bag to the saddlebag supports.

If you interested pm me these are for sale...
