Sportser Iron 883

I'm relatively new to the bike scene and have been contemplating buying the Harley Iron.

Now, it will be my first HD and I would just like some views on what people think about it. I know that its a relatively long wait to get it, do you reckon it will be worth the wait?

Im not going over board as it will be my first REAL motorbike, forgetting the scooters and Hondas to do the knowledge on!

Any views appreciated, and all the best.

nice looking sporty IMO, contemplated one myself, perfect if you intend to ride it alot and in different weathers as it shouldnt show as much as some of the other models available. Shop around and you shouldnt have to wait at all, i know Shaws harley have one in stock (or they did)

Its a cracking looking bike... minimal fuss... street cred... like it a lot.

As for the bike got two sportsters, 02 XL883 and an 07' 1200C love em...

Would like to trade down to a Big Twin or a Glide but I just know I wouldnt be happy...

I'm seeling my std 883, but seriosly thinking that when i can afford to buy another the Iron will be high on the list. I love the basic no frills look.

Re: Sportser Iron 883

It depends exactly what you want to do with the iron, if you just want to buy a cool bike to ride straight from the dealer then its your best bet, if you want to modify it and put new exhausts/air filters etc on it then i would really say go for one of the earlier year bikes like an 04/05 883/1200 non fuel injected sporty, they are going relatively cheap because there are so many of them around. They also are still the carb bikes which enables you to have whichever exhaust you choose without paying Harley a fotune for fuelpacks, stage 1 etc.

With a bit of powedercoating you can get one of the older bikes to look quite like the iron without paying £6/7000 for a new bike.

Re: Sportser Iron 883

In my humble opinion the standard XL883 is the best looking Harley of all.........lean.....economical....handles well.....I bought mine new last year, and wouldnt dream of changing up to a chubby model. Plus its the least expensive model in the range. For my test drive the guys at St.Leger in Doncaster put me on a Custom XL......it nearly put me off! Feet forward...skinny front tyre...raked position.....not my cuppa tea at all.....crappy handling compared to the standard XL. If I need a horny exhaust note and an extra 5 bhp in the future I will buy a pair of Rush slip ons (1 1/2")........with the standard stock air filter there is no need for a FuelPack with this set up.

Re: Sportser Iron 883

Just today I ordered an Iron 883, which won't arrive until September..! Not too fussed at the wait, as I'm recovering from a slipped disc. This is my first 'cruiser' my current (soon to be previous) ride being a Buell XB12R.

I know it's a massive change of pace, but to be honest it's long overdue - four years ago I planned to ride cruisers, but ended up going the sports bike route. Children, a back injury, and a day on a borrowed Sportster has taught me that actually, I do enjoy riding at sub light speed, perhaps more so, I think the pressure to hit three figures every time I saw a few metres of spare tarmac was actually stressful - the introduction of the Iron swung it for me, I'm not a chrome polisher...

This means I'm new to this forum - so hi.

The other bike on my list, my plan B as it were, was a 2009 Bonnie. Notice the black engine casing and alloy wheels.. heh.

My big newbie questions are as follows;

1) Can anyone recommend a good place for aftermarket parts? I like the simple look, no tassles for me, but one of the things that I liked about the Bonnie was this city bag, I'd like to find something similar for my new bike for my laptop if possible, and nothing in the HD catalogue looks right.. like this, but y'know, black--> 2009 Triumph Bonneville - A Picture of 2009 Triumph Bonneville

2) The screaming eagle 1200 conversion. Is it worth it? Before anyone says anything, I know that I'm never going to get the same power as the Firebolt, I don't expect it, but the idea of a 1200 conversion appeals. (I wasn't mad on the grey nightster engine, otherwise I'd have had one of those, having ridden both, I thought that the look of the Iron was worth the smaller engine, not to mention the cheaper price!)

Finally; I like the forum.

Smile Re: Sportser Iron 883

Hi, this is my first post. BUT thought i'd say i got my Iron 883 in March and have had a LOT of fun with it, just over 4,000 miles of fun

This was my first Harley, so have no other experience to comment on, but would recommend the Iron to anyone, have had Stage One fitted and Vince & Hines Slip-ons, after all "loud pipes save lives".

Turns heads, easy to clean and fun to ride!

Re: Sportser Iron 883

I ride a 2000 883C, great machine, I dont worry about handling, I can put the side stand down one side and the exhaust mounts the other, the forward controls dont become a problem until the wind starts to blow my big feet off them at 90 MPH, sorry 70 MPH. the low riding position is only an issue when the wife is on the back, at which point suspension travel in the rear is almost none, one of us needs to loose some weight. The only issue I have is when I catch up with some born again sports bikers on the way home from Rivi, they don't half slow a guy down, but the look on their faces when a sporty goes through on the brakes into a corner is more than worth it.

Light, manouverable, and not too powerful, you just can't beat the sporty package.

Cheers
Mick

PS really gotta get a new photo.
